Big RED Button

Post by Colin Francis » Wed Apr 07, 2004 3:46 pm

I am assembling the equipment for making my MX 5 a push button start. Has
anyone used an alternative red button to the S200 Honda (extremely expensive)
one. There seems to be a lot of suitable ones in the States . As it is going
through a relay it doesn't have to have a massive amp rating. I have a mate who
will engrave the word "Start" on the button. I would prefer to source the
button in NZ if possible .

On http://keith.miata.net/ you will see the Big red Button data .

We have a several catalogues from the likes of Dick Smith and RS Components, I can have a look and find you a part number, but give me some idea, how do you want to mount it and how big would you like it to be.

I can source anything you want from these people if it is inconvenient for you to do so directly

THanks for the reply Eric.
It will be going in the hole where the Cigarette lighter is . 22.5 mm is the
size of the hole . THe one they use in the States is a Cutler -Hammer E22E2C -
red, non-illuminated, NO/NC protruding button with a chrome bezel.
It is about the size of the buttons on the remotes on crane lifts etc in
factories.

I read that one of the hot Falcon models comes with a
starter button! Good source of cheap-ish parts
perhaps?

you can modify the "hazard" button so it doesnt latch
on, then run it through a relay.Theres an article i
saw somewhere on the net ill try and find it. You
could possibly sand off the face of the button to get
rid of the triangle,or stick a piece of plastic over it and have it engraved.
Just another opton.

Colin,

I went through this about three or four years ago. After a lot of
searching I found the Cutler-Hammer E22E2C button somewhere in Penrose
(Auckland).

I can't remember the name of the place, but I just looked up the yellow
pages and there is a Division of Cutler-hammer in Avondale.

I've got pictures of mine on www.shift4brains.com

Hope this helps.

I believe some Fiats and Saabs have a start button as well, so might be
worth checking out. Might even find something suitable at a wrecker. The
other option might be the buttons used on industrial electric motors for
start and stop (large drill presses for example). These are quite rugged
while the types available from Dick Smith and Jaycar are not very rugged at
all.
What price is an S2000 one anyway? Just curious.

I heard they were over 90 bucks. The only problem with them is one has to ream
out about 5 mil from the cigarette lighter hole which is not good IMHO.

I'm not sure why anyone would want a big red button unless it is fitted to
either a turbo booster or an ejector seat, but the correspondence has caused
me to raise another source of irritation.

Is it just my peculiar build, or does anyone else find that the ignition
switch is so positioned that a normal size set of keys plus remote constantly
chafes their right thigh as they drive? Short of keeping the ignition key
separate (and therby running the risk of losing it), does anyone have a
solution?
