Here is an article on the next generation mx5, which thankfully won't
look like the Ibuki concept. Sounds quite promising actually.

So a model for the posers and latte sippers, and hopefully a stripped down R
type package for the drivers, and then they are thinking of a larger ragtop
on the rx8 chassis ?? having too many models can sometimes spread the
resources a bit thin.

"...A senior Mazda source told Autocar that the MX-5's rear end has been
redesigned to accommodate the shape of a folding metal roof. Inevitably,
boot space will suffer."

lol

so the spare tyre, the battery and the now the roof are all in the boot,
come on guys take the plunge and stick the bloody engine in the boot as well
!!!

Tell me it isn't true! That is absolutely ghastly!!! It looks like a bar of
soap on wheels.

The roof pillars, just for openers, look totally out of proportion. As for the
metal roof, why do designers always have to pander to people who do not
appreciate a work of art for what it is? The MX5 is a convertible sports car,
you know, a car with a SOFT top, what part of that do they not understand?

The boot space will suffer? I am going to have to start batting on the other
team, as there will be only enough room for my handbag.

Where is the classically simple interior, if we wanted a cheap Porsche copy or
something from outer space, we would not have bought an MX5

(I case you hadn't noticed, I am not really very impressed with the new
design.)

If you want a realy good laugh, have alook at todays NZ Herald Motoring section. The new Merc sports car has a hot air vent in the head rest to give you a hot air scarf so your neck doesnt get cold!!! What does that say about Merc drivers who want a sports car but dont want any discomfort!!

Well they're still keeping the soft top version so it's not all bad.

Don't panic, the car in the photos isn't the new MX5, it's the Ibuki concept
that is also mentioned in the article. And, of course, it did say there'll be
2 versions - folding tin plus a real soft top. I know which one I'd go for,
after all, what's the point of lugging a piece of extra tin around in the boot
taking up valuable space for 98% of your driving?

The Ibuki actually retains a lot of the MX5's character. Not so sure about the
interior though...or the 'electronic driver aids'.

More HP + more electronics + more comfort = more $$$$$$

If they depart too far from the original concept they may find many MX5 buyers
will look elsewhere. If this happens at least prices of NA/B models will
retain good resale.

Oh yeah - make mine a soft top!!!
