Number of mx5's ( was RE: New Mx5 turbo)

I remember when Mazda NZ invited the club to the unveiling of the M2
(must have been 1998?). At that time they said that they had sold about
500 mx5's new, but the total registered (including imports) was more
like 5000. There must be at least 10,000 by now.
