MX5 CD

Post by Douglas Ormrod » Fri Feb 20, 2004 9:28 am

Hi listers

Im new here just bought a 1993 V Special through contact with the MX5
club web site.

I have a question about the stereo. It has the original Pioneer
radio/tape/CD stack - good sound and I would kind of like to keep it
original if I can. However, when you put in a CD it sucks it in thinks
about it for 10 seconds and then spits it out again. Ive tried several
different CDs. When you put the CD in a little red light to the left of the
CD slot flashes set. So the question is does any one know if this is a
repairable problem, or should I just get a new stereo.

Thanks

Douglas

Have a look at www.miata.net it's the bible for this kind of stuff.
From memory that is a common problem and there may be a fix there.
Mike.

Hi Douglas

I had the same problem with the unit in my Diamante, I am told it relates to
the Laser in the CD being out of alignment and not able to read the code on
the CD, could be true could be "BS", but if you are in Auckland, there is a
place on Newton Rd, on the right, just going down the hill from K Rd, who
fixed mine, but who's name I can't recall. Rapid Radio put me on to them, so
they would know, It cost me less than $100 including in and out

Hi Douglas
In my 91 V special, I have a similar problem: my CD player will jump during
tacks, not play certain tracks and then often not spit the CD out when I press
eject. It takes a complicated procedure of pushing many unrelated buttons &
turning the car on and off several times before I get the CD out! I'd love to
get mine fixed rather than replaced too. Let me know what you find out.

My 1992 V Spec also came with that stereo. It worked fine on original CD's
but could not handle recorded (copied) CD's. I always copy my CD's as I
don't mind replacing a $1.00 copy, but am not too keen on damaging the
$30.00 original. It is common for older cd players to not be able to read
CDR disks due to the low reflectivity of them. I installed a JVC stereo that
will play MP3 files so I didn't have to find room for a cd stacker. Works
very well and I didn't have to add a band expander for the FM radio. I have
kept the original stereo so it can be re-installed if required.

Depending on the cause of the fault different things will be required. I had the same problem but my laser in the cd was faulty and a replacement component was not available. I put in a new head unit.

Oh yes, it might be worth trying a cleaning disk too cause a dirty lens will have the same effect!

Hi All;I have 4 cd players from NA's that I cant get repaired. The common
problem according to my radio man is the laser is weak or burnt out.He has
tried to source me some but no one makes one. There also seems to be a
common fault of internal failed soldered joints. This also affects the
radios performance. Remember we are talking about units which are around 10
years old and have been in hard riding sports cars which is not good for
there internals.Best bet is to buy a modern double din size cd/radio.Ross.
