Oil filter

Please can someone suggest where I can buy a Fram oil filter for my 1.6l NA. I understand that they are a much superior filter than the Repco equivalent, and not as expensive as the genuine Mazda part.

There is a taller Fram filter available. I'll look up the No. tonight for
you. I get the equivalent from the "warehouse"!!! $9.95 ea. It is about
20mm taller and the same dia. Slightly lower filter resistance (larger
medium area).
The Fram filter is quite nice with it's built in gripping surface.
Supercheap have them. They also have Valvoline filters, I don't know about
the quality though.

May I suggest you NOT be penny-wise and pound foolish.

I have run the gambit when it comes to OFs and have found the MX5 OFs
better than any others for an MX5. Given you get a club discount at JA
F-M, I might be forgiven for thinking a extra $ or two would be worth
the investment.

There is an old Pennzoil OF commercial from the USA that has an auto
mechanic holding up a Pennzoil OF while another mechanic is removing an
engine from a car in the background. The mechanic sticks his arm out
holding the Pennzoil OF and says: "you can pay me now", then looks over
his shoulder at the mechanic removing the engine and says: "or you can
pay me later".

END OF COMMERCIAL... and my words of wisdom!!!

Sound advice which I am intending to take.

I have had a look back through emails on the subject and it has been sugested that the equivalent Fram filter is better than the original. Something about fluid flow I think. My main difficulty is that I would like to change my oil (with a Shell synthetic, again recommended by the forum) before leaving for Taupo on Saturday and I cannot find the time to visit a Mazda parts dealer. I have also splashed out on some Amsoil for the gearbox and differential.

As always, good advice is always welcome.

Further to the filter story, The one I'm using is branded Group 7. It is a
Purolator filter and the part No. is V4610, I've had one on my car this
year, (3400Km) with no drop off in hot or cold pressures. The oil is only
now starting to darken. It is due for the yearly change. I'll cut it open
after changing and report back.

Good link Bill, there is another somewhere in the Miata garage, I'll see if
I can find it. The origional Mazda filter I pulled off my car and cut open
seemed to have a fabric medium which was so contaminated that it felt like
shellac. I gained nearly 5PSI in oil pressure after the change!!.

Well Bill here goes...

1) I have had a Bright orange FRAM filter (With the easy grip end) in my car
for about 6 months.
2) The oil is still golden (semi syn) and oil pressure is consistant. No
valve train noise on start-up.
3) Got mine at Supercheap Auto in Auckland.
4) $16 if I recall correctly.

There's been a lot of hype over the correct oil filter to use... I have seen
many opinions about the FRAM filters in the USA forums and yet there's still
a 50/50 split about it. At the end of the day if my oil is still golden
after 6 months of daily driving then it has done it's job in my opinion... I
will let you know if Im picking cardboard bit out of my engine in future

?: 6 months seems like a very long time between oil / filter changes.
What do you use your MX5 for, driving to the local Diary just down the
street within walking distance?

Well then, after all that, and despite saying that I could not find the time
to go to a Mazda dealer, I was able to do just that today. And the cost, for
a genuine replacement oil filter, albeit with a Ford badge on it, was
$12.60. I could also have bought a cheaper but non-genuine item.

I live on the shore and have to travel to Auckland Uni's Tamaki campus
daily, so that's about ~45km/day.

Really? 6 months is a long time between oil change? My oil seems to be fine
so far...

Can anyone comment on an appropriate kilometre interval between oil changes.
I realise that the type of driving (open road, Auckland commute) has an
impact on this too.

10000k is suggested for the NA in the owners handbook, I would assume the NB
and poss NC are the same?

Hi Dave

(One of the very best oil filters on the market is the K&N - manufacturers
of quality oil suspended air filters as well).

Re oil change intervals, it depends greatly on oil grade and driving
conditions.

Generally, if using a cheap grade of mineral oil - change every 3,000km (&
oil filter) & if using a high grade of mineral oil - change every 5,000km (&
oil filter).

Semi-synthetic oil make it 7,000km & Fully-synthetic make it 10,000km.

I agree with Ian though - if you want your engine to last practically
forever - change the oil & filter every 5,000 km. And use a quality oil
filter such as the K&N and fully synthetic oil such as Mobil 1 5W 50.

I owned a Galant VR4 Evo 0 for four years running 12 psi of boost on the
street and 18 psi on the track (345 hp at the flywheel at max boost) using
Mobil 1 10W 50 fully synthetic oil with a K&N oil filter changed at
10,000 km intervals. After covering 100,000 km during ownership for a
total of 142,000 km's, the head was removed for porting and valve lapping -
and we saw that the bores had the original honing marks still visible -
synthetic oil really does work & is the best. Increases power too by
reducing friction and reducing hot spots.

If driving short distances with lots of cold starts per distance travelled,
change the oil & filter more frequently - if driving longer distances with
fewer starts for overall distance travelled, the distances as up top are a
reasonable guide.

I concur, 5000Km seems about right for mine, I used to do it at 10000
when we first had the car, and had bad tappet noise, fixed by changing
the oil, at about 6500. No problem at all if I change at 5000

it's a good idea to change (or at least top up) after track time as
well - the heat, revs and noise

wears out the oil faster

I used to have a Mitsibushi Sigma 2 litre turbo. I changed the oil (Duckhams
10-40) every 3 months and oil + filter each 6 months. I think the 6 monthly
change was about 12km intervals.That engine and turbo was still ok at 250km
, the last 150km was fairly hard driving.
