I have a JR supercharger, however I installed it, so can't help with a
professional installer.

Richard,

I guess it comes down to what you want to do with the car. From my
understanding the Jackson racing unit is quite nice, but is limited in
the amount of power that it can deliver. The FM Uber super charger can
go a lot further in the power game should you want to (I believe that
boost is addictive).

There is a HUGE amount of information on miata.net under the power forum
- you can read about all the supercharger options until your eyes bleed.
The advise is normally balanced, and fair and would be a REALLY good
place to get enough knowledge before spending $$$ and finding that it
may not be what you want - or indeed to make you happy that you have
ordered exactly what you want - you wont read too many bad things about
the JRSC.

In regard to the advise that you were offered re: turbo over a
supercharger, again the miata.net forum has a huge amount of miata/mx5
specific advise with 100's of people with them installed. This is an
"each to their own" type thing.

In short - with the JR supercharger you will get a peppy MX5, with
really nice linier power delivery, that is not so powerful that you will
need to upgrade clutch / diff etc (it makes the car iro 40% more
powerful)

Probably nicer to drive around town, than a turbo (depending on their
setup), but a lot of the turbo cars are a lot more powerful and many
have more than 100% more power then the original - a couple on this
board from memory are running iro 200RWHP - I believe that 250RWHP is
achievable on stock internals on a 1.6 (ok - just)

Either way - I hope you find what you are looking for. I am arranging a
forced induction 'day' and believe that at least one SC'ed car will be
there. Depending on where you are you may want to join us for the day
and have a look (or a run).

Thanks for the e mail I'm not a mech so I'm a bit nervous about tackling it myself. Do you feel the instructions are straight foward enough for a layman? how long might it take? How do you feel about the performance benifit, would you go for the optional 'boost' kit +15% more? Thanks again for the help

Richard...
just for information, the Jackson timing controller
isnt that flash at all... there are several better
and cheaper solutions.
The jackson knock sensor unit is even less value for
money and is a waste of time/money if you dont fix
what causes the knock i the first place!
One is the Greddy E manage blue unit which controls
timing and fuel and is fully tuneable via a laptop.I
have this on my turbo'd car, BTW
The other is the bipes timing unit.
Another great solution is the "voodo box" from flying
Miata. This does plug n play fuel delivery
as does the "elf" (powercard) from BRP.

The BIGGEST problem with any forced induction on a
stock ECU'd car is that under 4000rpm the stock
computor is running via the oxygen sensor and trying
to keep the Air Fuel Ratio at 14.7:1, No matter how
much fuel you dump in via other means, the Factory
computor tries to take it out again, which is a very
very bad thing as you want to be at around 12.5:1 afr
This is perhaps the MAIN cause of engine failure in
supercharged cars (especially the 1800's and NB cars)
as they run lean at low revs.
The solution to this is to fit an "oxygen clamp" which
tricks the ecu into NOT pulling out Fuel.
I have an O2 clamp on my car and the difference in
power delivery below 4000 rpm is night and day.
Just a few things to think about..
Do lots of searches on the above topics on Miata.net

Thanks chris that site is a real help. The JRSC can be upgraded a further 15% with a boost kit. This can be added later, so I may just installthe base unit and see. I'm not a fast driver, I just enjoy that thrust every so often.thanks, Richard

your input is very helpful. It was recommended I include the BTC. I assumed due to being manufactured by the same guys they would be most compatable. Could you please tell me where the oxygen clamp can be bought?

need supercharger installer

Post by Matt & Sarah Avery » Sun Mar 26, 2006 11:06 am

If you are still thinking of going with The JR , Rotary Power on
Aucklands North Shore (Glenn is the owner I think?) would have to be
about the most experienced installer I know. He sorted out some trouble
on my old car. Don at Autoway services in Hamilton has also played
around with a few. Be warned that there are a lot of turbo experts out
there who may take on the job, using what they know works well in turbo
applications, only to find out the hard way that its not always the case
(as another local member found out after a lot of time and money they
acheived less power!!).
I didn't do the install on mine, but I learned a bit driving a
supercharged car for 3 or 4 years. Email me off list if you have any
questions.
The Mazdaspeed kit is an earlier model of the JR kit you are looking at.

Thanks for the 'heads up' after doing a fair amount of researchon sites like Miata, most people talk down the JRSC as not giving enough performance. The down side is the urber or BRP are 2x the bucks! So I'm really trying to do my homework first. Does any one out there have an opinion on any of these units or even a good experience wiyh a TURBO installation? I sort of went down the supercharger road for the drivability factor. Thanx Richard
