Radiator problem?

Post by Speedy » Sat Feb 04, 2006 3:01 am

I got a leak on the top of my radiator?
To the right hand side of the cap.
Went to the radiator shop & was told i need a new tank cover or something?
Or replace the tank cover?
Anyone no anything?

Radiator problem?

Post by Okibi » Sat Feb 04, 2006 3:19 am

If it's around 15 year old the top plastic of your radiator will be a
brownish color.

Time for a new radiator.

You could get a new top tank, but then the bottom tank is just as old, and
the core is old and possibly partially blocked.

If your car overheats the engine could die.

Save yourself the grief and splash out on a brand new whole radiator.

If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Radiator problem?

And I thought I was bad enough working til 1am!
Our NA radiator top tank split 3 few years ago. The radiator specialist (in
Nelson) replaced the top tank only after checking the rest of the radiator
was in good condition. He did a thorough clean of the core at the time as
well. The engine temperature was more stable after the replacement was done
even though I hadn't seen any major change before the sudden split. Total
cost of the job, including supply and replacing the front drive belts
because they were easy to do without the radiator in, was around $250.00.
This included a callout to them on Anzac Day (of course it only happens on a
holiday!) for a hopeful but unsuccesful quick fix to get us home to
Blenheim. They said they could weld the tank for a bit less money but we
decided a new one was a much better idea as the fix could not be guaranteed
to last.

Radiator problem?

Post by poison » Sat Feb 04, 2006 10:54 am

My radiator started to spurt out water last week also near the cap (just to
the bottom left by the overflow pipe). Quotes in Auckland for a top tank
ranged from $185incl GST (watch the GST) to $245+GST, that is if I took out
the radiator. It was an extra $35 if they did it. Eric (I think) posted the
link place last week (sorry my PC crashed and all my emails were lost) but
they were the cheapest.

If you are outside Auckland it may be cheaper.

In the end I got one from a wrecker. And fitted it myself, risk is a similar
problem, but for me the benefit was I got an automatic radiator which is a
bit thicker.

Cheers

Gazza,

How much did you pay for the auto. Unit? (if you don't mind me asking such a rude question)

Radiator problem?

Post by Speedy » Sat Feb 04, 2006 11:34 pm

My car is 10 years old & the top plastic is still green.
Ive been quoted $145.00 for the top tank & $55.00 for labour.
Im not sure what the core is like?
It never overheated. Just lost a bit of water.
Im getting it fixed Tuesday. Tried Friday gone but they were too busy.
So it looks like im going to have a sad weekend, carless!
