Radiator Size

Post by poison » Thu Feb 02, 2006 10:05 am

Hi

Does anyone know what the difference is between the NA 1600
and 1800 Radiators, is the 1800 physically bigger or does it
have more cooling capacity than the 1600?

And is there any size difference between the NA and NB
radiators?

My 1600 one has a leak in the top tank so I will either get
a new top tank or use this as a good time to get a s/h
bigger radiator which may be good due to the pending turbo
upgrade.

Cheers Gazza

Can check my NZ new NA 1800 handbook for capacity if it helps?? Apparantly
the auto trans radiator is the cheap/effective upgrade as it has almost
twice the capacity! A 16lb psi cap (as per NB) will help on an NA rad...

All,

I made some additional changes to the car a couple of days back and
thought some of you may find it helpful.

Starting at the back I noted that the brake pads had worn unevenly -
this was caused by the slider pin sticking.

Apparently this is a common issue with the NA MX5's. The pins are not
lubricated from the factory. It is easily fixed by applying some copper
brake grease. In the "Miata performance handbook" they suggest that you
lube the pins every 6 months, as part of your normal maintenance.

At the front I swapped to the 1800 brakes off a NB with new Brembo
rotors.

There are a ton of write-ups on how to do this - so I won't go into this
here (any questions just email me). All the parts I needed for the swap
I purchased via Ross at MX5Mart.

With the new pads rotors and fluid (DOT4) installed I am shocked by the
difference. My stopping distance on roads that I travel regularly has
dropped significantly - to the point that I am wiping speed off too
early and having to use the right pedal to get to the correct speed for
the corner. I would estimate a 30% differential - but how much of this
could be attributed to the state and quality of pads and fluid that were
in the car previously I am unsure.

Sad to say that I also think that the larger rotors look 'cool' behind
the wheels.

The car also feels surer under braking (why I don't know - this may
simply be positive thinking). On the negative side there is a
reasonable difference in the weight between the rotors - sorry I forgot
to weigh them before I threw them on - but you can really notice it as
you lug them around.

If you never track your MX5 - I am sure that good pads and high quality
brake fluid will suffice very nicely (in fact I chat with some folk who
race their MX5's and they still use this setup), but of you are a
regular track user (or want to be), then I would recommend calling Ross
(or your local wreckers) it is not an upgrade that you will regret.

Gazza,

If you buy an automatic 1600 radiator it is the same size, but it has
the advantage of a double core and offers far better cooling than the
manual version (single core).

Don't know of any difference Gazza, but the auto transmission cars have a
double core radiator, you might want to see if you can find one of them
