Autotek Service, I think they're on Carlyle St (a little St south of
Moorhouse). I don't think they're cheap, but I believe they are thorough,
professional and know what they're talking about. There could possibly be a
discount if you're a member of the MX5 Club - same with Roadster Rentals.

Hi Jen

That's interesting you should have an MX5 with an idle problem.

Today I've just helped sort an old NA that a friend had bought on the cheap.
It had old black oil as thick as treacle in the sump, the plugs had the
biggest gaps on them I've ever seen and the car was very slow, missed under
load and constantly cut out at idle.

Simple shade tree garage solution was:
Added engine oil flush to the engine oil and ran very gently for 15 minures at
a medium idle and then drained for 30.
Refilled with Mobil 1 SuperSyn 5W50 & replaced the oil & air filters.
Drained fuel tank right out and refilled with half a tank of 98 octane
Ultimate - added half a bottle of injector cleaner and half a bottle of octane
booster.
Replaced plugs and fitted new 10mm leads.
No timing adjustments were made.

Drove gently for 30 minutes and then pushed the car as hard as it would go
from a standing start to nearly 100k's holding in second gear. (on an empty
back road straight with no driveways - and no breaking of traction - safety
first). Over and again a dozen or more times.

The car performed a lot better right from the start, but after blowing out a
series of great brown clouds from the exhaust, suddenly hit it's stride and
cleared it's throat as the cleaning fluid did it's job on the injectors and
the Syn oil began to do it's job of freeing what I'm pretty sure were both
sticky rings and valves which had been dropping the compression back.

Now idles like a kitten with a clean exhaust and does the 0 to 100 in just
under 10 seconds smoothly with no misses. Not bad for an unmodified 1600
engine in a one tonne car.

On some later model cars, an idling problem can be sometimes caused by a
faulty sensor in the airflow meter located within the inlet manifold. A
friend of mine has a Subaru Liberty (Legacy) GT Turbo in Australia which has
had the sensor replaced twice since it was new - in just on two years. I've
heard that there's a company in Blenheim that rebuild's faulty airflow meters
because the cost of a new one is very high.

Part of the problem may also be the generally poor quality of the fuels
available except the 98. I only run 98 octane, as it's imported to NZ fully
refined from an advanced world-class refinery in Perth and makes my modified
1990 Astina run like the proverbial pocket rocket - having basically the same
engine as an NA. 0 to 100 in 7.1 seconds. Never misses, never quits on idle
and strange for an in-line 4, thumps like a Subaru boxer on full throttle.
It's very nice to drive.

If it can be done with an Astina, then it can be done with an MX5. With the
better handling & RWD. So continue to save my pennies and watch out for
member's MX5 turbo projects with interest.

A sportscar really does need some grunt to go with it & I'd like to see 6.5
second times out of the MX5 NA and NB projects - I reckon that would just
about right.

Cheers
