Wrecked MX5 price

Post by Peter Vullings » Sun Jan 15, 2006 7:20 pm

Hi all,

Would anyone hazard a guess as to how much I should pay for a wrecked MX5?
Any amount of body/interior damage is fine, just as long as the engine goes
and the mechanicals are in order (suspension subframes etc).

Basically I will use it as a donor for a custom car project (HYPERLINK
"http://www.pixelthis.co.nz/envy/"http:/ ... o.nz/envy/), so
doesnt need to be in a state where it can be repaired.

How much should I expect to pay for such a car?

Cheers,

Peter

I was going to recommend Keith's book but it seems you've already read it.

Please don't take this as criticism, just my initial thoughts:

The only way the project would be commercial is if the final product was
significantly lighter than the MX-5 (around 700kgs), or people would just
stick to their MX-5.

If you're going to stick a bigger power plant in (like bullet did) don't
make it look like an MX-5 (which you're obviously not) people wont spend
$100k+ on something that looks $20k.

An all alloy V8 would be perfect if you want to give it more of a "supercar"
theme, but you could also consider a 20B to keep the Mazda theme alive.

Don't make it look too much like an MX-5 coupe'; Mazda's already built one.

It's a very ambitious project, I'd chat to Ross at http://www.mx5mart.co.nz/
about the cost of donor cars, don't bother e-mailing him.

You could also import very cheap MX-5's from Japan and sell off all the bits
you don't need to him.

My initial 2 cents.

Dave.

If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

I am sure Ross would have a donor car for less than 2K.

his site has some.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the reply any thoughts appreciated! Only thing is this is NOT
a commercial project, and never will it be :). If successful I might make
the plans available for free or minimum cost, but this is really just a
personal satisfaction project.

I havent read Keiths book yet, but I have been in contact via the locost
builders forums. He is very helpful, and his website contains a lot of
useful information too.

I know its an ambitious project, but I dont mind at all. I dont really
have a deadline, and I am interested in learning new skills and the process
as a whole as much as anything else.

Cheers,

Peter

Hi Robyn n Rich,

Nice name, lol :) That would be great if I could get the contact details of
your friend. I wont be starting the build for a while, but it would be
great to have contacts in NZ who I can bounce ideas off or help me out with
problems.

If you could email me: peter(at)pixelthis.co.nz

Peter,

Love your website very tidy

You can try mazspare in Hamilton I was there before xmas and they had a
number of wrecks there. Another option is to try and get one via Turners
they sell the insurance writeoffs, and are probably the cheapest way to get
a hold of one.

Good luck and please keep us posted on the project.

Peter ,

On Trade Me , Harvey Round Motors Wanganui had a 1990 mx5 for sale $4500. It
had just recently been imported so could not be road registered. Price is
quite expensive, but you could make them an offer. No harm in trying. Its been
on there for a few months now .

Good Luck

Hi Peter,

Can't help with the enquiry, but I have to congratulate you on the web site,
most impresssive, and, as list members would know doubt tell you, you are into
my two favourite makes of car!

I will be most interested in the progress of the project, if you can get
anywhere near the physical beauty of an AMV8 for MX5 money, then you are a
genius!

(I must admit though, the comparison of the various dimensions is very
interesting).

May I ask what stops it from being road registered? Is it just that it is
up to the purchaser to road register it, or is it impossible to road
register an import (or this particular import)?? I guess not the latter, as
why would he be trying to sell it.

Cheers,

Peter

Hi Eric,

Thanks for the compliments :). It is actually the body design that I am
most interested in hence the use of the almost complete MX5 drive train
with no modifications.

I was amazed by the dimensions too. The scaled down Aston fits the MX5
proportions almost spot on. Even the engine will fit under that low, low
Aston bonnet.

Cheers,

Peter

Hi
My understanding is that earlier models no longer meet frontal impact
requirements (pre 96 or so I think). This affects many makes and models, not
just MX5s.
