Motorcycle Accident

Post by MadMaz » Thu Jan 12, 2006 2:53 pm

Hi Ken

The first edition for the year of the Franklin County News came out today, Jan
12.

Re the fatal motorcycle accident, it is reported on page 5: "MOTORCYCLIST
KILLED. A 30 year old motorcyclist from Pukekohe was killed when he crossed
the centre line and struck a Nissan 4 by 4 coming the other way on Runciman
Road, Pukekohe on January 5 at 12.30 p.m."

No other details have been released at this time. It appeared to me that the
tyre marks left on the wrong side of the road indicated that the 4 by 4 was at
fault - but not so it seems.

Speaking of poor road driving I'm lucky to be still in one piece this
afternoon. I'd just dropped off some parts to a client of mine in Otahuhu
when an old run-down Commodore station wagon failed to give way, pulling out
in front of me from a side road on the right. I had to apply maximum braking
force to avoid hitting the car.

I briefly tooted at them - big mistake. I was greeted in return with three
faces staring at me out the rear window rolling their eyes upwards and
sticking out their tongues, several issues of "the fingers" and heads popping
out the side windows shouting some pretty bad language. Only 30 metres
further on the car stopped at a red light, the driver's & passenger doors flew
open and two large men the size of mountains got out and advanced towards me
with menace.

I'm not easily frightened, but I can tell you I certainly was right at that
moment. These guys looked like they weighed about 120 kg and had heads that
moulded into their shoulders with no necks.

At that split second a siren sounded and a Police car roared out from a
service alley immediately to the left. Two police officers in the car had
seen the whole incident and immediately arrested the situation.

I was told to drive on as nothing was required from me - the two officers had
seen all they needed to and were to deal with the offenders. Many thanks to
the Police - they were at the right place just at the right time - very lucky
for me. I'm sure somebody must have been looking out for me today!

I'm still shaken by all this though as I write. Phew!

Cheers

Hi Mark,

Bravo for the Police! I would have been a trifle nervous myself!

Cheers

Not nice...

Having been in a similar situation previously I can recommend that you
forget the "left hook", and use the "right accelerator" as they come
towards you. They soon move.

Nice to see the Police getting some credit on a job well done - sounds
like it could have turned nasty.

My wife and daughter had a similar experience in Rotorua many years ago but a
rifle was pointed at them and again the police happened to be passing and saw
it all and did the necessary.
cheers,

Mark

I find that the best way to deal with a similar situation is to just not 'toot' at all. I guess that, as I avoided them, why hurt their "pride" and get them all upset.
I quietly curse and grind my teeth, but at least using this technique means I've still got teeth to grind. Some people are just knuckle-heads and they only understand intimidation.
Would they have been so quick to step out of the car if they'd been:
a) alone
b) you'd been huge with no neck

I doubt it.

No harm done, but I'd avoid that part of town for a while (like until 2020 :0)

Cheers

Hi Ken

Tell you what Ken, you're not far wrong there. It was one of those situations
where you get such a shock you sort of think - this can't be happening to me!
It's got to be happening to someone else or is it just a nightmare and I'm
going to wake up.

If those two chaps had had their way I think I'd have been in for a long stay
at Middlemore. I'm a fairly little bloke and knew on the spot that I wouldn't
have stood a chance against those two fellows.

Anyway, am off to the local police station tomorrow with a little donation for
them. I've got a heightened respect for the guys and girls in blue and they
deserve a bit of a thank you for what they did for me today.

Cheers
