Type of MX5
To one and all,
We have just purchased a MX5 described as a 1998 model. I am having trouble
actually identifying which model we have. The body number starts with NB8C and
the car does or does not have the following, has recessed headlights with fog
lamps underneath, no central locking (or not working?), not sure about ABS (no
electrics around the master cylinder. no dash indicator lamp), radio aerial on
left hand rear guard, space saver tyre under boot, five spoke wheels, electric
windows. The workshop manuals (Haynes) only covers the models with flip up
headlights which I understand finished in 1997. Does anyone have access or
know where service data can be obtained for this model?
Thanks
Rod and Harriet

It's often called an NB8A (if it's the 1.8 not the "povo pack" 1.6 model).

If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

My car is a 1998, body number starts NB8C. 1998 was the first year of
production of the NB model. The main obvious difference was the fixed
headlights. Many other differences though, one of them being the aerial on
the left side instead of the right side as in the NA models. Mine's a 1.8
auto, tan leather upholstery, two air bags and ABS brakes. It had the Bose
stereo which was quite awful though (since removed). The ABS system is on
the passenger side of the engine compartment, mounted at the firewall. My
wheels are the standard 14" 5 spoke factory ones. Some have 15" five spoke
factory wheels. These were on some different spec cars as an option I think.
The 15" ones are shinier than the matt finish 14" ones.
There is no central locking but the drivers door does actuate the passengers
door lock. There is no automatic lock actuator in the drivers door. I added
one so that my alarm provides locking for both doors now. The alarm actuates
the added drivers actuator which in turn actuates the passenger door
actuator.
I have not come across much data as yet but there is a copy of the wiring
diagram for USA models available on the internet. I found this to be very
useful although a few differences because of the left hand drive.
Have fun with the new toy. We do!

Hi Rod, congratulations on or purchase.
The NB8c signifies that it is the NB model which is the series II and the 8
indicates that it is the 1.8lt engine. If it has ABS there will be a square
aluminum block with pipes coming out of it in the engine bay on the firewall
on the passengers side. You could also see if the white sticker is still on
the drivers side door surround just by the latch if so it will have either N
or Y under ABS for no or yes. This sticker will also made the model type i.e
S, RS or some other.
What colour is your car, and can you locate the sticker and give me the Model
Identification and I will give you what I know.
A lot of the data you want is available on www.miata.net or through this
group. If have not seen a Haynes manual for the series II but have a CD with
all the parts manuals all be it they are for the US models. Wiring diagrams
are available of the net but I will have to find the site for you.
Regards Nigel

Here's the wiring diagram:

Covers USA 1990 to 2000. Note the 1998 is the USA 1999 model.
Select the model year you need and download it.

My one is a NB6C '99 she is a very zippy and economical 1600 cc
with all the bells and whisles ( except ABS and central locking ) and
standard 5 spoke 14 " factory wheels , but has an excellent set of
RS*R - TI 2000 titanium springs , and New SR shocks which keeps this
little flyer as a rock on the road.

MessageDear Rod
Congratulations on joining the MX5 elite. Not quite sure what Bill is alluding
to with his Harry Potter comment - my speciality is trivia and motor sporting
history - but there are plenty of Hermiones around to help with the really
tricky stuff. There's also the occasional Neville Longbottom...
Look forward to seeing you around.
