TO THOSE OF YOU WHO MAY BE INTERESTED
We are two couples, both MX5 owners, who intend spending two weeks
touring the South Island in May of next year. By May, perhaps there will be
less tourists on those lovely windy roads, and it wont have got toooo cold.
At this stage, we havent worked out an itinery, but wondered if there
were others out there who would be keen to join in.
Anyone interested, let us know.

Hi Robyn n Rich
We are thinking of doing the South Island later in this year. Is there an
issue with rear plastic window cracking when frozen early in the morning and
how does one overcome this?

Hi Roy & Sue, we have had upwards of 50 cars on the Snowball run each year
with out any problems with the plastic rear windows freezing. Only becomes a
problem if you try and put the roof down without unzipping the window and
lying it flat before putting the roof down.
An excellent accessory is the protection cover, see item 2 in the for sale
page in topDown mag. They are made by club member Paul Bryant and well worth
having and would solve the problem of freezing up on a South Island overnight
stop.

To over come the problem of your plastic window cracking upon folding down on
a frosty morning, don't fold it down until you have had the heater on for a
couple of minutes to defrost the hood or before retiring for the previous
evening, park your car back to the east and the bright morning sun will have
it all soft and supple before your twinkle toes hit the floor in the morning.
Remember that the days will be bright and clear with no smog so don't forget
your sun screen.

Hi There,
As already suggested, DON'T put you top up OR down when it is cold and if you
want to put the top down in the morning when its cold, how about running the
engine for a while untill it is warmed up with the heater & fan on full and
then put the top down (window unzipped of course) before moving off. I live in
Marlborough and we can have some real good frosts in winter but have not had
any problems so far. Just use a little good judgment and all will be good
Cheers Simon.
