Hi Chris,

A friend of mine has a modified RX7 set up for drifting (which I would suspect most insurers would put in the "don't touch with a bargepole category") - he has it insured through National Auto Club. They will insure pretty much anything but it is expensive.

you get to do the certification work, and what problems did you
encounter?

Also once you had the car certified – who was so helpful to actually

I had a rollbar fitted to my MX5 recently and had an LVV Verification done by
MS Certification. He was great. The web site for the LVV Cert guys is
www.lvvta.org.nz which gives you a list of all certifiers and details of what
mods need a cert and which don't. If you require any info, email me direct at
ballochbeatties@xtra.co.nz and I can email you pdf info. I cant attach the
pdf's to this reply because I don't think the club site can do this.

After the roll bar was fitted, I had no problem continuing my insurance with
NZI. I think that if the mods are reasonable and legal, most insurance
companies shouldn't have a problem.

I may have to give them a go - NZI seems to have a good rep on this list. I
needed a lot of persistence with AMI to get them to keep insuring my lightly
modified (intake and exhaust) mx5. Their position was quote: "We don't
insure modified cars". I suspect it may make a lot of difference whether
you call the call centre (where they have minimal training and aren't
allowed to make decisions) or visit a branch (where they can exercise some
judgement).

I agree. I went to the branch manager and spoke to him before the roll bar
was fitted and he was very good to deal with, especially when he seen that
it would be professionally fitted and certed. I spoke to Malcolm Wrigley at
NZI ph 09 9048505. The certification was done by Mark Stokes, MS Cert, 0274

I had no end of trouble with AA insurance, they wouldn't even cover the car
for 3rd party only. I think the mistake I made was ringing them and not
going in personally. However the car is now fully insured with Classic Cover
(except when on a special stage or race track) and at only slightly more
(about $35) than AA was charging unmodified. For $10k insured value and $500
excess its costing me $299.07 pa. I have a MSNZ authority card for the roll
cage, seats and belts which seems to impress the testing station guys as
none had seen one before.

It looks as though NZI are the people to go to and they are also Classic
Cover's underwriters.

So Ian as you have a roll bar will we see you at the Taupo Clubmen's Series
this winter? Is anyone planning to do the dual sprints or races this year or
is Jennifer going to be the sole "5" representative again?

what about the dual car sprints at manfeild on the 21st, or Port road on the
22nd ?

BTW, I am with NZI and they were ok with the roll bar as it improved safty.

For you turbo guys...
was there anything you had to "do" for the cert??
Anything that the certifier brought up such as brakes,
clearances, bracket mounting points etc??
Im looking at putting a turbo brace down from the
turbo, to mount on the engine mount bolts, just
wondering if that'd be ok.

Yeh, I'm on a 5 week count down now... got the
injectors and modified fuel rail in. Doing the dump
pipe and final pipework at the moment. Then just have
to finish the new power steering reservoir.Then
exhaust,cert,tune.

P.s what sort of exhaust are you guys running.. im
looking at a 2.5" resonator then a 2.5" "semi baffled"
rear muffler to keep things quite but good flow. Any suggestions??

Hi Glen

I used to own a modified Galant VR4 years ago that I had to get rid of
because it's age and growing scarcity of parts turned it into too much of a
liability.

It ran an Evo1 turbo running 12 psi on the street and 17 + psi for the
occasional quick squirt. Like a number of other turbo cars, the housing
would glow white hot after a session on the track.

I'd be careful where you mount the brace - because a lot of heat will work
it's way down it to whatever you're attaching it to at the other end.

Good luck with the project - I'm keen to hear how it goes.
