reverse lights not working

Post by suburban_ennui » Fri Oct 20, 2006 8:15 am

hi. Just noticed that neither of my reverse lights are working. Pulled the backs off the lights and the bulbs look ok. All the other rear lights work fine. Could this be a fuse issue? Any other suggestions?

Here is a link to details about the two fuse boxes:

From memory, the reversing lights are run from the Meter fuse. If that goes you are unlikely to have any instruments either.

If you are sure that the bulbs are OK, then you have either lost the switch (on the gearbox) or a connector has opened up somewhere or you may have a broken wire.

Easiest first check is to replace a bulb. It is relatively cheap and if it doesn't fix it then you have a spare bulb for later.

reverse lights not working

I have had the reversing-light switch fail on my MX5 - it's an easy
replacement - only tool required was a big spanner (24mm, I think).

OK, definately not the bulbs ... (and, really, it'd be odd for both to stop working at the same time, right?)

So does that mean it's mostly likely a switch in the gearbox? Is something which can be fixed by removing the centre consol and gerabox gaiter, or do you need to go in from underneath? Any suggestions appreciated.

a very small number of cars have had problems with the car getting stuck in reverse because the reverse switch stops it from going back to nuetral....id have a look at the switch...maybe dodgy...
