DIY turn signal intake

DIY turn signal intake
this week I plan on having a crack at making my own turn signal intakes.
I will basically be using this as a guide:

most of it is all straight forward but I have a few questions.....
1) is this bulb just a standard indicator replacement bulb? eg will I find it at my local supercheap autos?
2) inside the turn signal housing there is also a normal white light (it lights up before you turn the headlights on(I have no idea what the correct name for this light is))...... would I be correct in assuming I can just remove this bulb and just terminate the wires so they wont short out on anything and it would work ok? or does this circuit require the bulb for the rest of the lighting to work? (the other option is to leave the bulb connected but cable-tie it out of sight (it would have the side effect of illuminating a little of the engine bay when turned on))
my basic plan is to follow the tutorial but I have a few tube of Selleys knead-it which i will use to nicely shape the intake vent and (fingers crossed) it should look ok.
worst case scenario I will pout, cry, stomp around like a petulant child then sigh and buy some aftermarket intakes. (those ones currently on trademe are what I am after, but I would like to try and save $$$ at the moment)

That 'normal white light' is called a Park Light. Those are legally required on vehicles in this country.
The TSIs on Trade Me (if you're referring to those red ones) only have an indicator bulb mounted in them. I was trying to buy some TSIs a while back, and found plenty of examples in the US but none had a park light, so they would have been illegal here without any modifications to add a park light somewhere else on the car. I eventually stumbled on some from a company called Joss Performance in the UK which had both park lights and indicators wired in.
You could always add daytime running lights somewhere to act as park lights, but 9 times out of 10 DRLs look like shit unless they came on the car from factory IMO.

The USDM models have a single bulb but it is dual filament. The taiwanese replacements are the USM style and come with an orang bulb. They have a loom inluded that fits he JDM loom. I have a pair of clear indicator units -from the states if I remember- which didn't hav the parklight in them so I just put th park light bulb in the front/side refector.
Which has never been an issue & looks alright I think.

They are a standard bulb known as a '380'
normally they have a clear glass.
I have a pair of the taiwanese lamps in stock and just checked the bulbs against the specs on Narva and Hella websites, and it seems neither of them do this bulb in orange.
I believe this is due to them being used pretty much only in USA vehicles.
This will create a problem for me if i blow a bulb in my front lamps as i have the taiwanese ones fitted.
From the checking i have done, Im pretty sure the part number is 1157NA,
i have now found them on trademe

And remember...for a WOF you need white park-lights but an amber indicator...so how will one bulb do both?
Am i missing something? or can park lights be like fog lights and be orange?...maybe!

It does in my car. The park lights are as bright as the originals and the indicators are much brighter, like an indicatorWideOpenThrottle wrote:So...if you used a double filament amber bulb would the indicator show up sufficiently brighter than the park light at night? i,m fairly sure there are 2 different filament brightness in them,
All i can say is when driving with the factory lights during the day,using your indicator,you can't really see them flashing when you pull up behind another car,With these lights ,you see it flashing,Alot more visible to other motorists as well,They are one of the smaller cars on the roads now days certainly lower than most,Need to be visible

do you have any hassles with the police or WOF checks due to the tinting laws? I was going to pop some 20% dark smoke vinyl film on mine but it seems that's a no no and would get my wrist slapped for being naughty.
are aftermarket smoked lens like this legal?
I still want to do intakes, but have put that on the back burner till I can suss out the lighting changes I would have to do.

If the light output is bright enough I don't think they'll notice (I know brake lights have to be visible at night from 200m, the same may apply for other lights).
If you're worried about their appearance during the day then you should still be ok. I've gone through a VTNZ WOF and driven past plenty of cop cars with what looks like empty holes as my bumper lights. Not had any trouble yet.
