Anyone experienced with car lcd/display?

Post by Mad Kiwi » Sun Sep 02, 2012 5:07 pm

HI Guys

I know bugger all about car audio so need some advice. My LINK G2 ECU has serial pc connection. I would like to use a laptop without a screen (located under a seat or something) connected to a 2 din display in the dash.

I would like to use a mini wireless keyboard and have the LINK tune/logging software running on the display and run the gauge display on the screen. This gives me boost, temp, revs etc and I can then match AFR to the gauge log which I can't now.

Not to mention being a lot easier to tune without balancing a laptop on your lap!

Question is will the displays available connect to a laptop? Most seem to use a S-video in, this is possible with an adaptor but vga in would be a lot easier....

Anyone see any drawbacks...?

One main drawback I can already see is being able to turn the laptop on remotely, but i have a few ideas for that....

Cheers
Mark.

you need a lilliput screen. they are 7" touch screens used mostly in car PC's.
theres a few forums for these. MP3CAR.com and incarPC.com should be your first start.
using a laptop is gonna be troublesome. a pico itx board inside a lilliput screen frame and powered by a pico PSU powersuplly is the way to go.its all the powerup powerdown stuff which is the hassle.
also this may sound obvious but you need to find a screen you can read in daylight in the mx. try reading a laptop out in the sun and youll see what i mean.
f course going full car PC means that you may lose your fm radio ability.

failing that. get a double din DVD stereo that has an Aux video input and get an s video or hdmi to component video adaptor to interface into the stereo.
