I've just had a Mongoose alarm fitted to my car, a standard 4 star one, but was given the option to have a microwave(?) sensor added on so that the internal area can be covered too (for an extra $85). As I have only just got it, and it is my first soft-top, I have the following questions:
a) Are these worth getting?
b) Is the price good?
Any comments/advice appreciated.
Many thanks.
Oh yes, happy new year too!

My previous NB and my present NC have the microwave option fitted. Works
well. Definitely scares the neighbor's cat when it jumps in the car with the
roof down!
The only problem I have had is if it's set a bit too sensitive, then it will
trigger the alarm when parked under a tree on a windy day. reducing the
sensitivity fixed that but took a bit of experimenting to get it right. I
fitted the sensor myself in my NB. My NC came with it already fitted,
presumably by the dealer when it was ordered by the original owner (NZ new).

I've got the uniden Microwave and it's great with the tops down, if anyone gets close to the sides of the car it gives a warning chirp, and if they even stick a hand inside the car it goes off on full siren. Took about an hour to calibrate perfectly. The only problem for me is it false triggers often if the roof is up. I have not heard of others with this problem, I am not so sure that uniden is good quality, I know their cordless phones don't seem to last anymore... (although the Panasonic one I got failed just after the warranty ran out).

My NB had a Uniden alarm in it (still does I assume) and there were no
problems with it. Don't know about false triggereing with the roof up
though. Who has their roof up?

$85 is cheapfor a microwave unit fitted.
As others have said, they take a bit of fiddling to set them up "just right" so make sure the installer shows you how to adjust it. (and make sure you get ALL the manuals with your alarm, not just the operators manual.)

Thank you for all your advice. I think I will get one put in, but when I asked the guy at the auto electricians he said that they need to be placed somewhere so that the beam covers the inside area. He couldn't see anywhere obvious that would look reasonably tidy, so if anyone can help with where you have placed the sensor, please advise. Any photos would help me decide too!
