A little browsing has suggested that Priority Start battery protectors may be reasonably effective for avoiding dead battery syndrome. I know they were mentioned in the Club mag once, and they are covered reasonably well here:

Anyone here using one to good effect?
And do they still have a local supplier? (can't find one).
Thanks!

battey maintainer for flat battery
I have just bought a "Battery Doc" trickle charger and maintainer that is doing a very good job of keeping the battery charged when I don't use the car. Got it from Auckland Motorcycles & Power Sportd, Khyber Pass Rd

One of the plug-into-lighter solar deals, I assume?ianbell wrote:I have just bought a "Battery Doc" trickle charger and maintainer that is doing a very good job of keeping the battery charged when I don't use the car. Got it from Auckland Motorcycles & Power Sportd, Khyber Pass Rd
FWIW, I got a quote from a local supplier for the Priority Start but at $270 it's beyond my interest level.
