New suspension now noisy

Post by Mikkels » Wed Aug 31, 2011 7:59 pm

Hi guys a few months ago I replaced all my shocks on my NA with new KYB units. I also replaced the boots on the upper ball joints on the A arms and repacked with grease. The new shocks made a noticeable difference to the ride and handling compared with the old originals with 200 k on them BUT there is a knocking noise audible on rough tarsal chip. This seems more pronounced on downhill. Large bumps do not make any sounds it is just that floating over rough chip. I have had a look under the front and checked bolts for tightness. Any clues?

My car had a similar noise a wee while ago,Turned out to be loose Front brake caliper bolt.
I had done the 1800 brake conversion about 18 mths before hand,Checked all over the show trying to find this annoying rattle that would only happen on light bumps and not heavy ones,1 loose caliper bolt,Worth while checking

The only experience I've had with rattles/creaks was my old titanium extractors used to do it under braking, downhill and any form of bump. Replaced them with some awesome Japanese ones and the problem was solved.
I plan to paint my calipers this weekend so I'll bear in mind to get them on at the right torsion.

My rear brakes used to rattle on our gravel drive at slow speed but disappeared on the highway-the new shocks on my landcruiser used to knock and this was coming from the top nut/rod moving slightly which has now long gone.Maybe you re-greased too much causing the bush to slide around excessively if thats at all possible?

I had time on the weekend to check the right hand side which I believe the noise is coming from. Everything is tight there I fluxing caliper bolts. I did tighten the upper ball joint by a third of a turn. Hard to figure the torque on this bolt. Replaced the cotter pin but overall I don't think there is an improvement.

Will do the left side this weekend before getting depressed.

try checking your bonnet stay clip. i had to wrap tape around the stay where it clips down as it was rattling.

I have noticed that the rattle goes away with the slightest pressure on the brake pedal. I also did the big brake conversion. I do not have spring wire installed on the back of the pads. Could that be it? Was there something like that on the 1800 brakes?

Cheers

It could be the flat metal plates between the pads & the pistons as they are prone to rattle-you need to try some anti-rattle spray like Disc-quiet from auto stores.......since i now have ebc race pads which came with an adhesive backing for the pads my rattle as described the same as yours has now gone away!
