Minor problem installing big brakes

Post by Mikkels » Sun May 08, 2011 8:22 pm

I obtained the big brake kit from Ross for my NA6. Had a quick go at installing this afternoon and struck a problem trying t remove the rubber boot for the smaller caliper retaining bolt. I assume that you push this through from the closed end but this was not going anywhere fast using a bolt and after using CRC to lube. The rubber looks a bit old anyway so may look for a new part if available and fit to the new caliper mount.

Any advice out there for this job?

Those boots are a arse.
They pretty much rust in place and rot.,If i remember when i did my conversion ,I didn't touch it,Just put it together using the boots the caliper came with,Why did you need to change it?

I'm not even sure you can get them new from Mazda.
I've sold a couple of S/H boots thru work ...when i can get them out nicely in one piece.

Brand new caliper mounts in the kit did not have the boots installed meaning I need to change them and the antirattle clips across from the NA6.

Will talk to Mazda tomorrow

When I rebuilt one of my rear calipers on the MX5, the rebuild kit I got from BNT had all the slider pin boots in the kit. I guess the front kits would include the boots as well.

Checked with Mazda today and they can get me the boots at $50 a side. I declined that kind offer and am going to have a go at pushing out the boots on the weekend. It is the bottom one that is the problem as it goes all the way through the mount. Top one is just a snap on external job. Will use penetrating oil to try and lube things up then work around with a piece of wire or some such and try not to destroy them in the process.

Cheers for the advice guys

Job done

With more time to hand the boot removal from the caliper mounts went well. I used penetrating oil and a 2mm diameter piece of wire about 150 mm long. From the back of the mount I carefully pushed the boot aside and gently push the wire between the boot and the hole wall that it fits into. Using quite a bit of penetrating oil I was easily able to past the wire right through then wriggle all around the circumference completely freeing the boot from the mount. Pushing from the back with a screw driver had it out. Installing in the new mount was easy. I just cleaned off the oil and used silicone spray to lubricate everything and the boot slipped into place easily. the top boot is just a pop off type and does not pass through the mount so simple. Brand new rotors and pads are on and all works well. Peddle feel is soft at the moment as brakes have not bedded in yet. I did remember to clean off the greasy coating on the new disks Ok I remembered on the second disk and had to remove one side after I had assembled to do that important task.

Thanks all for your comments and support. Now have all new pads all around and bigger brakes on the front. Shocks are next.

No the proportioning valve is STD 1.6. So do I need to worry?
