Tyre Rub

Post by R LTD » Sun Sep 03, 2006 9:30 pm

I recently replaced my alloy wheels and find that on full left hand lock I get tyre rub against the suspension arm. Doesn't occur on right hand lock. The rim offset is 38mm so there should be plenty of clearance.
I probably need to get the setup checked by a suspension expert but would like any advice as to the possible causes from the forum.

Have you done the calcs on the rim dimensions and tyre size to ensure
you have the correct sized wheels/tyres? 38mm offset would give you 7mm
more clearance than stock - but not if you've gone up in rim width, or
the tyres are wider/taller. What size rims/tyres are you using now?

There is an offset calculator here:
http://www.1010tires.com/WheelOffsetCalculator.asp
and a tyre size calculator somewhere on miata.net and a few other places.

If it works out that you have the correct sizes, I would have thought it
could only be because of alignment imbalance. Choose some alignment
specs that you want (e.g. factory, lanny, miq, or other recommendations
from the internet miata gurus...) and take it to an alignment specialist.

Not sure if the suspension components are mirror opposites on both
sides, but I'd assume they would be.
