On mine, I find the intermittant and first constant speed to be good speeds, but the "fast" speed doesnt seem to be enough faster than the other speed to be a usefull change. It appears about 120% faster when it really needs to be 150% or more. This is why I was recomending Rain-X, you can "get away...

I thoroughly recommend Rain-X or its competitor, Prestone Clear-View, available at Repco, gas stations, and similar for $10-$15 a bottle. Its fantastic. The film it puts on the windscreen makes water run off very easily... It... a) keeps the view clearer in very light rain, delaying your need to eve...

There's actually two MX-5's in the Targa... I went to Turners Auctions Yesterday (Sunday) evening with Clive, where the cars were on display before starting out today... There's a black one that belongs to a husband+wife team who also took part last year... and a red one thats from Australia. Funnil...

What is the recommendation from the group for spark plugs
Reuben, Unless you engine is modified, theres no reason not to go with the plugs listed for your Roadster/MX-5 in the NGK book that anyone who's going to sell you the plugs has with them. You just ask for spark-plugs for your MX-5, and they do all the hard work. If purchasing at a self-service place...

I recommend the same as Mazda... NGK plugs with 1.0-1.1mm gap... Its on the sticker under your bonnet. You'll notice that the part number for the plug ends in 11 and the pre-set gap is 1.1mm... This is not a coincidence :) I think I have BKR6E11? but there are a number of permutations, and its not a...

Spark plug leads
Ok, you've caught me out... that price was a guess... NGK blues currently are US$30-$35 in the USA. I'm currently still using Australian Repco leads which cost me AUS$50 in 1996. They use Champion branded wire... and have lasted over 150,000km I also own a set of NGK blues, purchased in NZ, at a mor...

As Lou was hinting at... Bad spark plug leads are THE most common cause of hiccuping and stuttering in MX-5's. If you suffer this symptom, and dont know when your spark-plug leads were last changed, then change them. Might as well change the plugs as well, but its more likely the leads themselves. C...

I've had Redline MTL in my transmission, and I honestly noticed very little
improvement over whatever was in before... and since then, I've got Castrol
VMX (not a synth) and it seems pretty much the same to me...

Don, Yes, EGR is Exhaust Gas Recirculation... its an emissions thing in the states that is supposed to suck exhaust back into the intake, and a pipe runs from a fitting on the exhaust header, behind the engine, into the intake plenum... I always wondered if it was on our cars or not (I'm only really...

I think you'll find that early factory hard tops dont have the demister on the
window (after-all, only mid-91 cars onwards have the wiring for one).
Not sure if the lining came in midway through production or has always been
there?

All Japanese cars from '96 onward comply (I believe), as there are no more pre 96 imports... I'd heard that ,94 onwards MX-5's comply, but that info suggests maybe thats not true. In any case, if you go look at your VIN number, I suspect you'll recognise one of those codes immediately :) NA = popup ...

The rev limiter is in the ECU that runs the engine, and I find it very hard to beleive that its stopped working... The tacho is not entirely accurate, and maybe its accuracy has slipped a little? (never heard of it, but more likely than rev limiter to stop functioning) The tacho needle tends to "ove...

Lou, I agree that the engines physical design dictates when and in what order the sparks need to be fired. But its the electronics that actually make it happen. You need both of them to be matched to eachother, in order to have a smoothly running engine. I can see your argument being true for older ...

1.8 in my 1990
I would argue that the firing order that is required by an engine is governed by the things you suggest... But the firing order that actually happens is governed by the programming in the ECU (and the wiring in the loom). Luckily for us, with the MX-5's double spark system (two pairs of spark plugs ...

Throttle-body adapter plate... I'm not sure of the exact details, but its my understanding that you need the plate to blank off some idle air bypass passages either in the 1.6 tb or 1.8 plenum... the way that idle speed was controlled changed slightly 1.6 has electric thing under tb AND air-valve on...

Randy Stocker of www.solomiata.com says they fit... For an MX-5/Miata/Eunos Roadster, the VLSD was only available in the 6" diff for the 1.6 NA cars. The Torsen is an LSD unit that bolts into the standard Mazda 7" diff as came with all the 1.8 MX-5/Miata/Eunos Roadsters... Different year 1.8 MX-5 (e...

The Torsen and open diffs are both Mazda diffs...
The ring and pinion can be swapped, as a set, between open and Torsen
diffs...
You cant mix ring gears and pinion gears from different sets..
Clear?

how can you tell whether a replacement MX5 engine is the lo
What Lou says about the bolt shoulders is correct... but our British friends have discovered an even easier way to check... If you look at the accessory pulley on the front of the engine (the one that drives the waterpump, alternator, and p/s or a/c if you have them)... The old design with the weak ...

Generally, they are all like that to some degree, especially the early ones
like yours and mine.
Type of oil can have some effect at changing the feel, and also there is a
"shift turret" that needs oil too... basically to lubricate the lever pivot
mechanism... but don't expect miracles...
