I'm 6' and got much better driving comfort by simply removing the driver's footrest. I don't have a problem with pedal placement, just need my left leg stretched out for all the bits where gear changing is not involved. You can't manage it with ultra wide modern style shoes though - don't fit throug...

Northland trip
Just returned from a week-long trip to Bay of Islands and the Kauri Coast in our Millennium Edition. Never been before and we loved it. You Northern Chapter guys and gals are lucky having this area so close at hand. We had to drive 1000 kms to get there and decided to take it easier by doing the tri...

We'll have to catch up again. Won't be at this weekend's run though as we are away for the weekend.

There's a picture on page 112 of "driver" magazine this month of the outdoor area at the National Motor Show - presumably last year's, although it doesn't say. Look closely and you can see the MX5 Club banner in the centre of the picture and I counted no less than 17 MX5's clustered around it in a t...

A great MX5 history book
A colleague at work told me he'd seen a book with an MX5 on the cover in the second-hand book dealer just down the road from where I work. I went to have a look and found an immaculate copy of "Miata Mazda MX-5" by Jack Yamaguchi and Jonathan Thompson. The dealer only wanted $18 - I parted with my c...

A very good question, so I just did the required experiment. If the cases are lying on their sides you can fit 2 cases in the boot of an M2 easily. It is wide enough for 3, but the boot is not quite as deep on the right hand side as on the left (due to the battery placement) and a case doesn't quite...

The boot is a bit bigger in volume and more "packable" due to better arrangement of the space - both battery and spare wheel are under a flat floor that stretches from one side of the car to the other - much more amenable to packing a lot of stuff. It isn't as tall in the middle where the M1 boot ha...

Actually in the M2 we can fit a 3-man tent, two camp beds, 2 sleeping bags,
single burner cooker and pots, cups, plates, clothes for a week, food and a
camera, without removing the spare wheel (which is under the boot floor).
Not bad huh?

Just been out for the weekly top down "Oh dear, I accidentally forgot to buy the packet of chippies when we did the weekly shopping" quick trip into Upper Hutt and back (only 8 kms each way, but some nice bends near home). Rained hard last night, showers this morning, been in the garden all afternoo...

We get a few more kW and wider tyres and a better shaped boot to make up for it.

Unfortunately, those of us with M2's can't wave that way and have to use a friendly hand greeting.

I keep seeing MX5s on the roads around Wellington but they all have the top up and can't wave back even if they wanted to. Even on sunny days. Can't understand it. Why buy a 5? I even saw one with its hard top on last week :( I guess this is where a lot of Wellington jokes get unleashed from north o...

Power measurements
I just happen to have the original Owner Handbook from my daughter's 28 year old Escort 1100 and it quotes the power in both PS (48) and HP (55), so there's your conversion factor. Just to be sure the 1300 is quoted at 57 PS and 65 HP and the 1300GT at 72 PS and 82 HP. It also says that HP is an S.A...

GOING FASTER
I have a question for all you lucky people with go-faster MX5s. I've heard lots of other turbos on the roads blowing off what is presumably too much boost (e.g. driving round town) - very disconcerting. Do superchargers do this as well? Does it only happen to turbos that are using higher boost press...

Unless there are two like it in the country (seems unlikely) I know the owner of the car. He was going for the Austin Powers look as an alternative to racing stripes, his numberplate is OBHAVE (haven't seen the film, but I'm told Austin Powers says "Oh behave" as a catch phrase?). The Union Jack fla...

Hey Mark, must be something wrong with your car. I don't get any rain in at much over 40 kph so long as the side windows are up as well. Agree about the top staying down all the time, although Colin Partington (you out there Colin?) has a good story about when the top really MUST be kept up in bad w...

MX5s in drag
Watched a bit of the street drags in Upper Hutt yesterday. No MX5s competing (not a corner in sight), but it did make me wonder whether any club members ever had competed on the drag strip in any capacity of MX5, and if so what official times they recorded for the eighth of a mile sprint? Plenty of ...

Don't see this as a problem. I've got a Suzuki Vitara as well (to tow the horse float) and it's the difference between chalk and cheese. I don't try to drive the MX on dirt roads and across paddocks and I don't try to drive the Vitara much over the advisory speeds for corners (and less than those sp...
