Thanks for replies. I've checked the service history (have had the car for 10 years, always serviced by Mazda) and believe it or not the plugs and leads have never been replaced! Mind you, it has only done around 63,000 kms, used to get used a lot more, but not much in the last few years. I'll try n...

Misfire when starting warm

My 2000 NB has recently started to misfire badly when starting when warm: either when it has been driven and left for a few minutes (e.g. when popping into a shop) or when it has been parked in the sun all day. Either way it starts but generally running on 2 cylinders only, with strong fuel smell (s...

It doesn't have the original or equivalent, it has a wet cell replacement. It was put on a trickle charger for the night after the jump start, around 14 hours. Apart from that it has just been getting recharged over the last few days by 25 minutes drive to and from her work each day.

Wavering idle speed

My daughter has a 1990 that has recently developed an idling problem. When returning to idle after driving, the speed drops to around 500 rpm, then rises to 1000, then drops to 500 and so on, until after a few times of this it settles at a steady 800, as it should. The number of times it can do this...

Insurance

We are insured with AA. They now give extra discount if the car has an alarm fitted: when we insured it originally (5 years ago) the alarm was mandatory to get the insurance. Cost per year for $21k agreed value on a 2000 Special Edition was $326 this year in Upper Hutt, garaged, 65% no claims. The b...

Tyre recommendations (LONG)

I need some new tyres on my NB, 195/50/15, to replace the original Michellin Pilot SX's, and am considering both the Toyo T1-R and Goodyear GSD3 based on what people on this list say about them. Tony's Tyre Service in Lower Hutt will do the T1-R for $160 and the GSD3 for $179, so if performance on b...

Cost of going to work c/o Parker (Was: Top Down's The Point)

OK, just to be accurate, I typically get around 13.7 kms/l (very consistently) in local drives around the Wellington region (where I live). By my calculations (multiply by 2.83 to convert to mpg) that's 38 mpg. On longer trips I typically get better than 14.1 kms/l, which is 40 mpg. Recent trip in t...

Top Down's The Point (Was 1 Hp MX5)

Hi Mark Manage to get around 40 mpg / 13.5 kms/l / 7 l/100 kms out of my 2000 NB. Always drive top down except in extreme wet weather. Wouldn't dream of having the top up on the MX5 when it isn't actually pouring with rain. It does seem that a lot of people don't agree with that though (obviously no...

1 Hp MX5 (Was: Air Conditioner)

Well I own an MX5 AND a Honda Jazz and I can assure you it's a lot easier to
carry large objects in the Jazz. Also easier to carry 4 people when you need
to.

Yes, it is also a lot more economical.

No, it isn't as much fun to drive, or as comfortable.

Horses for courses.

South Island thoughts

As the list is quiet... Just got back from a great top down trip around the South Island for 2 weeks. Bumped into a very friendly MX5 owner in Nelson at the start (think he must have been a club member, drives a BRG) and a Club outing at St Arnaud near the finish (chatted to MX5A about his boot rack...

An interesting number

I gave up waving to MX5's with the top up a long time ago, as I never got a
response, obviously weren't enthusiasts. Now only wave to those with the top
down. Still not a lot of responses, but a much better hit rate than before.

New owner with a few queries.

I have a 2000 6-speed with 38,000 kms and my daughter has a 1990 with 150,000. The NB is quicker to 100 kph than the NA, not by a lot (it is 100 kg heavier after all), but at that speed it is pulling away from the older car. I agree it doesn't develop much punch at lower revs, basically if you want ...

Can I suggest that if there is a person whose posts you really don't like,
that you do what I do in such situations - add their e-mail address to your
blocked senders list (assuming your mail program can do that). They then go
straight to the Deleted Items folder.

Radiator leak

Follow-up on this, turned out the top tank had a small split in it, so Michelle took it to the friendly local garage to get it repaired. While they were doing this they discovered that the thermostat switch that drives the main fan wasn't working, so that fan only ever came on when the aircon was ru...
