getting 195's will make the problem worse. the 195/60 tyre will have a slightly larger diameter than the 185/60 tyre so the circumference of the tyre will also be greater. Your speedo measures the number of times that your wheels turn and effectively multiplies it by the circumference to give you yo...

That's what I thought too but the documents suggest otherwise since the MX5 doesn't have a 'permanent roof structure'. I'll have to try it sometime because I would like to put a proper cage in my car but since I don't live in NZ any more I wouldn't drive the car enough to maintain a motorsport licen...

Highlands Motorsport Park

How is it that a massive new motorsport complex has been built waaaaay down the bottom of the country and yet Hampton Downs still isn't complete? crazy!

Also surprised I hadn't heard of this earlier, did anyone else know about it?

So you got the motorsport licence so that you could fit the cage or do you need it for events anyway? I'm curious because after reading the LVV standard I think it would be possible to install a roll cage into an mx5 and just get it certed, but I haven't been able to put it to the test so to speak. ...

Hi Mad Kiwi, what did you need to do to get the roll cage legal for the road? Do you have a motorsport licence or did you just get it certed?

I bought a complete set of poly bushings from flyin miata and I though it was a very reasonable price (I think a bit over 400NZD all up incl shipping?) They also have the set of diff bushings on their own: http://www.flyinmiata.com/index.php?deptid=5676&parentid=0&stocknumber=13-98100 I didn't end u...

Short answer yes, long answer - with my 195/50-R15's my speedo matches the speed on my gps perfectly while with the stock 14" size it reads a little low.
I trust that the GPS is more accurate so consider that an improvement.

Always a wealth of info on the lvvta website.. definitely worth a look if you are modifying your car because it spells it all out pretty clearly. http://lvvta.org.nz I can't confirm it because I cant download the relevant documents at the moment but I believe that any car originally fitted with a ca...

Aha, out of action until february. I hope it doesn't get too expensive, I thought the council was footing the bill for the upgrade? I found that HD was never doing a track day when it suited me generally, Puke has 3-4 more track days than HD. Btw, my local track where I live in Dresden, Germany now ...

Pukekohe have pretty regular open days (roughly once a week), they're a fair bit cheaper than HD, slightly closer to auckland and no requirement for a roll bar, although obviously not a bad idea eh.

Although I hear they're changing the track so maybe they'll be out of action for a bit?

I got my car certed by Neil for arouns the $500 mark; turbo + coilovers. I would recommend him as I thought he was very good to deal with. Re the brakes: I fitted some M1166 front pads from 0800 race brakes and had no issues with the cert - otherwise stock 1600 brakes. I found that they couldn't han...

I'm off to Germany tomorrow and my car is parked up with the hardtop on for the foreseeable future. I'd thought about selling the softtop since I'll probably only be taking it to the track from now on.. it's only about six months old bought from Ross at MX5 mart.. fixed plastic window. The rain rail...

Well, 6th gear in the 6spd is even shorter than 5th in the 5spd.

im sure you will pay less for a rocker cover gasket from north harbour ford than you would from repco They are pretty similar in price although when I got one from Repco the guy charged me $40 instead of the $70 he quoted :) That said, the Repco one hardened in under six months and caused massive o...

I enquired about stock bushes at South Auckland motors (mazda/ford dealer) a couple of years ago and they quoted ~$1500 for the full set. You don't have to buy everything though, I think that was the combined cost of all the smaller kits. It would be as much if not more effort to replace these than ...

Remember to update us on how it goes.

I think the trick is to leave it in there for a decent amount of time. It's not something where you can just run the engine for ten minutes then drain again.

Rusty coolant

I'd like to make a bit of a plug for a product that I used last year. When I bought my car the cooling system was not in good condition. I found three holes in hoses, two of the little metal pipes leaking, the 'infernal plug' leaking and a shot water pump. In addition to this there was no coolant in...

There's a place in Aus with the 6UL's. They're more expensive per wheel but the shipping might be more reasonable?
