Don't quite follow, there is no metal insert, just a metal cap on the bottom of the knob that seems immovable and the logo label about half way down the knob.

Stupid question perhaps but have you tried turning it? Every car I've had (including MX5s) the gearknob just screws onto the end of the shaft. apologies if I'm misunderstanding the question.
