I think I'd prefer the NA as it is really my retirement "toy" and I like the original lines a bit better than the later models. I have a BMW wagon(and an E36 coupe) and my wife drives a late late GTi so its not like its a daily driver - more for those fine sunny days when I feel like a drive around ...

Got the MX5 itch again..time to scratch it?

After selling my old MX5 a few years ago because it was a manual and my wife could not drive anything other than an auto for medical reasons (netballers knees) I have decided that its time to get another - especially with retirement looming in a couple of years when I'll need something to keep me ou...

Replaced oil with 5W-30 now noisy

According to Norman Garrett(Godfather of MX5) in his book he says " The lifter...has been the one weak point of the Miata Engine. If you don't choose your oil correctly they will not pump up at start and make a loud ticking noise. Thinner oils such as 5W-20 weights appear to solve the problem for mo...

Well I finally got my A into G and had a look at the leaky drivers side window seal. Got some 10mm rubber strip from Para at Wairau Park - about $6 per metre. I popped the drivers side rubber off the softtop and lo and behold somebody had been there before me. The rubber had been split and short len...

Aerial information needed

Recently I had to get a new mast for the retractable aerial on my 1991 MX5. No problem there until I came to fit it. Had to remove the aerial to get the old parts out and then it became a mission to wind the old mast back in using the motor. Finished up taking it to a local auto sparky. He finally s...

FAQ: Crankshafts, Failures of, and identifying yours

One of the things that most new owners seem to want to know are "What are the weak points/problems with MX5s?" Seems to me that one of the majors relates to crankshaft failures on some of the early cars. To help identify the problems and which crank is fitted to your car - remembering that it MAY ha...

One quick way I have found to see what crank end you have is to look at the bottom pulley. The earlier ones (That give you trouble) have 4 bolts that hold the pulley in place as well as a dowel (Pin) for locating the pulley. The later ones don't have the dowel and use the key as a location. SNIP Gr...

Hmmm..rain has arrived and tonight I got a couple of drips from the rubber seal on the quarterlight where it overlaps the drivers side window. Soft top is in good condition and I can't see any reason why water would drip in here. Not much coming in - just enough to annoy me as it drips on my sleeve,...
