Cam Shafts

Correcting myself and if anyone is interested...

Standard 1600 Intake Cam is 236 degrees, Exhaust is 248, Overlap is 111.

Fletch's cams are:

Intake 254 degrees, Exhaust 260 degrees.

These are from my copy of Desktop Dyno.

Cam Shafts

I'm surprised that the HKS 256's work ok with the stock ECU, but as I havent
tried them...

Fletch, according to my info the stock cams in the MX-5 are very close to 256
degrees - SEAT TO SEAT - so maybe the HKS cams aren't that radical. Probably
why they run OK on the standard ECU.

Exhaust

Actually I think its the velocity creating a vacuum effect which scavenges the
exhaust fumes. A larger pipe has lower gas velocities and the momentum in the
flow is not as high... Also in a well designed extractor the resonances in the
tubes assist with the same thing, again, as I understand it.

Exhaust

Theoretically I think 2.5" is too large for a normally aspirated car. 2" is
usual. Theory would have it that at 2.5" you lose some exhaust gas velocity,
and hence power. That right Fletch?

Try Nissan on Kent Terrace, ask for Peter Liew, tell him I gave you his

Bonnet venting and wet floors

The rain rail is usually shot by the time a roof replacement is needed, and most roof replacements seem to avoid replacing the thing, but repair it instead. (I forked out for a new one, and from memory it was about $300!) Its possible that the leak is coming from something back there that should hav...

re battery chargers

dicky smith, Jaycar etc sell plugpack chargers as Gary mentioned. Something like this might be good http://shorterlink.com/?K80F0J but 1-2A probably better if you can fine one. This would be OK but slow... and the terminals would need replacing with big clips... The best solution is a nicely regula...

re battery chargers

Yup it is. The item I bought from them was like a wall plug pack, you know, the sort of thing that powers telephones etc, but a large one. It had two leads with battery clips on them coming from it and was limited to 1 Amp. It was specifically called a trickle charger. Bought it about 2 years ago. G...

Your battery will be fine, as long as you have the original MX-5 battery do this... (DONT LET ANYONE PUT IT ON A REGULAR BATTERY CHARGER THOUGH!) Buy yourself a trickle charger from Repco, they're a plug pack with leads and clips. They deliver about 1A. Put the battery on that (take out of car first...

A used one should be OK, but you should pull it apart, grease the moving
parts with brake grease, and check for corrosion. If you can't do that
yourself, then have you mechanic do it. Don't just fit it and assume it will
be OK. If its been sitting around there will be some corrosion.

Good advice. New shocks will make the car feel more solid. Its worth adding
the two lower braces too, but my understanding is that the upper braces in
the engine and at the seatbelt towers will do little to add rigidity.
