MX5 soft top driver's side water leak

Post by fiveisalive » Sat May 21, 2011 5:57 pm

Is this a common problem with the mx5, especially after a hard session of rain?

The car(2002 RS) i was looking at buying had a big wet patch on the driver's seat.

My NA has no leaks and has been in torential downpours. If window is left slightly down when parked and it rains water will pour in.

Hi- it might be wet from having the door opened whilst getting in & out during rain as having no rain rail the water tends to run & drip onto the seat.

You could also check to see if the window is pressing against the top rubber when closed & the split around the mid point of the window should have no gap when closed. I am assuming its the same design as our NA & NB?

As far as I can see, yes it is.

I'll go have another poke around this week.

Just in case anyone's wondering it is the black 2002 RS being advertised on trad3me.

my NA had water leaks from both doors. The soft top seal was badly torn where the securing clip is and water was getting under neath the seal and filling up the soft top clamp on the left hand side. when removed it seems the previous owner had pooed it up with sealant which had come away so the problem reoccured.

Also the water guides on the doors had crumpled up as they are part of the window rubber and had ridden up over time. This guides the water into the drain hole when the door is closed and straightening them out helped alot also.

Still has a leak when it really hoses down but i am so over working on the car at the moment it can wait a little while before i have another look

Also leaks from the cracked rain rail at the base of the soft top but i refuse to pay $350 to mazda for a piece of plastic! when the weather is nicer i will pull it off and find something that will do the job of replacing it. The water from this leak drains into the boot so there is no carpet or drain bungs in there at the moment

It could also be due to the drains in the B pillar being blocked although that is more likely to wet the carpets and the boot than the seats.

Broomfish, re your cracked rain rail, I had the same problem with my 91. Instead of replacing it I just bought a roll of Flashtac which is an aluminium tape with a sticky bitumous backing that can be used for sealing all sorts of things. It worked a treat and I now have the carpet back in the boot and it has stayed dry since I did it about 3 or 4 months ago. Unfortunately you still have to take the hood out to do it.

I take it a hardtop would solve all this water leaking issue?

May have to go invest in one...

Check the window is going up far enough.
Also seals tend to move apart at the centre join. They can be pulled back together.

When my window is right up & i close the door the top right corner just nics the curve of the hardtop.

Maybe my conversion to manual windows has something to do with it plus i think i need some other rubber bits that the hard-top sits on right by the middle latches. The NB has something that my NA doesnt!
