Headrest speakers??

Post by Michael & Kate Cooper » Fri Jan 20, 2006 3:41 pm

Some have used speakers from The Warehouse. Some have cut the foam to make
larger ones fit.

If you google with "headrest speakers" and "mx5club.org.nz" (all in same
search) then you should find past discussion on this very topic. There is
lots of info on various solutions.

Headrest speakers??

Post by poison » Fri Jan 20, 2006 4:15 pm

Hi Jenny

It's not a hard job to do yourself. If your car already has
headrest speakers then there are already wires that go up
the back of the seat and to the stereo.

You need a screw driver to remove the old speakers and
boxes, then pull the wires out 'carefully' so not to pull
the plugs off the wires and after you cut out the extra foam
with a sharp knife the plugs should fit onto new speakers.
And for mounting you just cut the holes and push them into
place, the seat cover will hold them in place. easy job and
sound is great.

Good luck.

If you want them to sound awful and be practically useless, leave the
originals there or replace them with same size replacements!
If you want them to sound quite good (vast improvement over originals) get
some cheap 4" ones from the Warehouse, SuperCheap Auto or similar. For the
best you can get from the headrest installation, get some good Sony or
similar.
I use Warehouse 4" ones and did not ahve to cut any foam. I think you might
need to trim a little to fit Sonys in there.
You must check the phasing of the wiring too as it is often wrong ex
factory. Plenty of info available about that.

I bought two pairs of 3.5" Alpine Speakers on ebay. $US13.00 a pair. If you
know someone in the States who can ship them to you like I did., it makes them
well worth the effort. Check ebay, search 3.5" speakers.
I have a pic of my finished seat installation somewhere that I could send
you.

Hi Jenny
I recently a sony unit in my 1993 and installed sony 6.5" speakers in
the door. They were an exact fit, I had purchased 6" speakers but they
were to small.

I did the same, using Sony Xplods, 6.5s go straight in on the same holes. In
Auckland you can get then from the factory shop in Nugent St
