Headlight bulbs

Post by Simon Lord » Thu Apr 22, 2004 11:14 pm

OK, I know this is going to sound completely stupid to those of you who can
build your own superchargers out of a child's windmill and a roll of aluminium
foil, but some of us are not so gifted.

My left hand pop-up headlight is no longer working on dipped beam, I
discovered this evening. I stopped at a service station in the hopes that I
could easily get at the headlight and get a replacement bulb, but rapidly
realised that I not got the faintest idea where to start - do I need to undo
those screws at the side or what? Being extremely tired I didn't even try to
work it out but drove straight home (nobody bothered to flash to let me know
that one of my lights was out - not even one of the four police cars I
passed).

Before I go to bed I thought I'd see if someone could save me the bother of
working it out for myself tomorrow and provide me with idiot-proof
instructions. Couldn't see anything on the Club website but maybe I was
looking in the wrong place.

Thanks (yawn...)

Headlight bulbs

Undo the four screws holding the black plastic cover and remove it. Loosen
the three screws holding the thin ring around the edge of the light. You
only need to loosen these and you can then rotate the ring to remove it.
Don't loosen the adjusting screws! Careful though as it holds the light in,
so support the light with your other hand. If you have sealed beam units
then replace them with Hella or similar (if the budget allows) with
replaceable bulbs. Otherwise just remove the bulb and replace.

Headlight bulbs

Thanks, Grant, and everyone else who contributed to the previous discussion on
replacement lamps. Once again this list has proved invaluable.

My lights were sealed beam so as you suggested I have installed a pair of
Hella H4's with Xenon +50 bulbs with (for me) remarkable ease. So far all I
can say is that they fit and they work, as I haven't had time to take them out
on the road yet. I had lunch yesterday at 10.30pm... I'm sure they'll be
great, though, with all this wisdom and expertise behind them.

I now have one spare original Koito sealed beam light free to a good home!
