Wobbly light, won't :0(

Post by Graeme H » Sun Mar 20, 2005 8:48 pm

Hi all
a few weeks ago I told you all about my wobbly light, and how I changed the units from left to right to make sure it wasn't a dodgy bulb filament. The unit still wobbled, and now it has wobbled the (originally off side) bulb into darkness, and I'm going to have to change the whole unit...buggar!
Has anyone maneged to pick up light units from a scrappy, and how much did it cost?
Or is it going to be just as easy and cost effective to replace both units with the all singing and dancing halogens that are available (this was about 100 bucks if my memory serves me correctly...double buggar).
Waddya think?

Cheers
Graeme H
PS On the bright side, having no light shining out, has at least cured the wobble :0D

Do you mean the bulb/sealed beam unit? Or the whole mechanisms? You'll
probably need to change the whole link mechanism to stop the wobble.

The sealed beam units are standard (repco/supercheap auto etc) thingies
(7" I think?). Surely only about $20 each.

Or you can replace the sealed beams with non-sealed reflectors and lamps
(also standard from many places). If you change them there are 100s of
different lamps you can buy and a number of different reflector units at
varying price & performance.

If you just want another sealed beam unit, I have a spare one on my shelf
you can have. I changed them a while ago for non-sealed & halogen lamps
when a sealed unit blew.

If you are after the whole mechanisms... forget everything I've just
said... :)

Hi zorruno
I mean the bulb/sealed beam unit. I'll happily take your spare off your hands if you don't need it. Just name your price!
I can arrange to pop down to your place one evening after work, bu8t would it be poss to do it this week as we're off to Wellington at the weekend (in the car) and I'd like to go down there all legal like. Just mail me some details.
The wobbly lowering mechanism will have to wait for a while :0(

cheers

Hey Greame

Be wary, zorruno's hand me downs are always a bit suss' he's even become a
Holden driver of late :-)

But seriously, think seriously about spending a little under a hundred bucks
for new units (not sealed) and Halogen bulbs from Repco, it really is a
massive improvement. If your going to be driving at night the extra vision
could save your life. The factory lights are dismal at best, the new ones are
great, really is a must for any MX5 (especially now our daylight has been
stolen in the evenings).

Hi Gazza
I know exactly what you're saying, and I agree with the new halogen idea. However, I need the car roadworthy by this weekend, and there's no way I'll get to repco or similar before Thursday evening.
At least "zorruno's Dodgy Auto Parts' may have late night opening this week :0D

Good point, just make sure you meet in a well lit area with people around and
you 'should' be OK...
