Registration Plate Frames

Post by Bill Rehm » Wed Dec 08, 2004 10:27 am

FEI

Since I owned (7 years now) my car I've had a reg plate frame that
attaches in such a way that it is positioned BELOW the upper front
bumper, in the "air space". It is from North Shore City Mazda. It does
not detract from the car's appearance and causes no trouble with the
revenue collectors. Personally I think painted on reg numbers on the car
detract from the car's appearance, thus my frame is what I consider the
ideal compromise.

Perhaps NSM still makes these reg plate frames available?

Hi All,
The best option I have seen, is to mount the plate in the air space with
a spring loaded hinge so that as you pass 100kmh the top of the plate
will be forced down by air flow so the car receives sufficient air to
the radiator ;-) (with the obvious revenue collector disadvantage)
As you slow again the plate becomes erect again for the "Jack booted
wanabies" :-)
Anyone brave enough to try this through a WOF?

Adrian

I suppose that would have the sam effect as the "proper" version :)
Sadly 240k's can't be reached on the auckland motorway often on the
lovely weekdays, I suspect the previous owner has hit a pole or
something just enough for it to dig holes in behind.

Yes, I saw this one and looks a great idea... even tried to order it
through the Team Miata site ( www.teammiata.com/TM305.htm )... BUT they
won't supply outside USA.

Anyone know where they are available that will ship to NZ?

I am sure that I saw somone with a front number plate hinged in this manner at the recent gymkhana held by the Northern group. Can anyone shed any light as to hwo it was attached?

wasn't that Larry's car? It was waving around pretty well at the
gymkhana, where I don't think anyone got out of 1st gear ... :)

I recall reading some instructions which basically use a top-mounted
door hinge at the top of the "mouth".

here it is...

I've also got the plate hanging down over the air scoop, and it seems to be on a regular frame. It doesn't give any heating problems, and it looks an awful lot better than being stuck up above the bonnet line!

And why not I ask... quoting from the site:

so there!

PS Ross, it also says:

"For U.S. License

Perhaps you can pick up an appropriately sized NZ reg plate while you're
in the US getting your new bracket! :>)

And, yes people have tried this over the years - and been fined or
warned. I think Larry Y still may have his mounted like this.

Many traffic police (especially in Auckland) know this trick well and if
they don't see a licence plate when you are driving, will give it a prod
when stopped. If it swings - you get the fine.

I know of hydraulic and electric plate lifts* too that can lift your
plate when moving - but still very much illegal obviously.

Cheers
H

* generally supposed to work the other way for Hot Rods etc for car
shows - i.e. when you stop for the show, the plate hides, but when
driving it is visible.

Most commonly one or two hinges on top of the plate inside the mouth -
top swinging.

Bill,
No, I haven't found out yet how to get one here... except maybe
involving transshipping from one of my relatives in US... and from
memory US plates are just about the same size as ours... ours may be a
smidgeon bigger.

just for reference, there is absolutly no requirement
to have a front plate to pass a warrant of
fittness, although it is an infringement not to have
one one the road.
Im working on a hinged plate that can be retracted
up and down by using a central locking solenoid but it
would require the removal of my factory spot lights
for the plate to swing in the mouth.

Hey Ross, not trying to be a BB, however the reason I'm asking about
plate size is because of the many issues surrounding the legality and
WOF issues expressed on this matter (including Eric's recent
comprehensive response).

Personally, I suspect that if I took my car to my local wof guy who has
done my wof for 7 years (and did fail me once for a legitimate safety
related issue) he would probably overlook the swing plate matter.

However ANYONE will easily notice the additional holes drilled through a
NZ reg plate so you could attached a designed for US reg plate swing
apparatus. Just thinking laterally mate ...

Since you have family/friends in the US, perhaps you can ask them to
give you a precise measurement of plate size and the attachment hole
locations. However be aware that reg plate registration is a STATE not
national regulated matter so different states in the US could have
different size plates (or a minimum different attachment hole
locations).

Of course I have friends and family in several states over there but
they are all so busy if I asked them to do what I suggest they would
probably say "go fly a kite". :>)

These people have what is supposed to be a genuine Mazda mount. So
presumably they are available from Mazda.

This is not just a "could" but an "are". There's quite a bit of
variation between some states [don't ask for a list please!] as well
as some slightly more drastic legal differences between states when
dealing with number plates like the well known "no front number plate"
required in Florida.
That said, in general they would be the same size in most cases +/-
10mm or so in width.
