I made a big boo boo!
Monday night (26th) at around 8:45pm going home to the northshore from the city... I was on the Victoria Park flyover and was traveling at around 80-89km/h come toward the end of the flyover I gained a little speed as it was sloping down but there was very, very light traffic... low and behold there was a 50km/h sign up on the light board and I lifted off the gas and was begining to slow down...
Then FLASH! right beside the light board... Yup I got a photo...
Im not denying I wasn't speeding but it wasn't over the top +10km/h... but with some cars behind me suddently going from 90km/h to 50km/h just seems mad and a recipe for a rear ender... Anyone who's travelled on the bridge at night with very light traffic will know this...
Ohhh well great lesson learnt... even though this class costed about $630...

disputeit!
1/ ask for the original photo for your defence. Original, uncropped etc. Any other cars in the photo are grounds for "reasonable doubt" especially if you were being "tailgated" at the time (subtle hint)
2/ go to court, I would if someone owed me $630! Ask the police why the sign was lit for 50.... If they can't answer the judge "may" give you the benefit of the doubt... and ask the police how many other cars were photographed, and what the normal speed is at that location...
This is advice I've followed in the past, last time got a "declining to proceed with this case" from the taxman (sorry, police).

I was under the impression they werent supposed to have cameras too close to a change in speed zone... I mean, you can only reasonabl;y slow at a certain rate... if it was right next to a 100-50 change (and it was the first 50 sign, not another one before that you over-looked) then you'll probably get off.
Its at least worth the effort of writing a letter... You can quite often get off on something where you are technically in the wrong, but there is a reasonable explination/justification...

I drove past where the camera was located and I beleve it was a total set-up....
Here's the situation:
1) The van was parked next to the speed board that lit up on the bit where the green fence ended and the small driveway was...
2) The 2 lanes closest to the left had arrows directing traffic to the 2 right lanes (I believe that if I had been on the left most lane the camera would not have been able to track and photograph my plates and I was too close)
3) There was no apparent road works going on at the time.
4) There was very light traffic (If I slowed down to the posted speed limit I would probably be carless right now with my rear end crumpled)
5) That camera was very busy that night as I looked in my rear view... I think every car that cam through was snapped...
I will see what the real damage is when I get the letter....
I don't know if a dangerous driving charge will follow (Apparently +36km/h)
I will probably obtain legal advice via a friend in the know as to what actions to take...
Ohhh well 1st speeding infringement ever in my 7 1/2 years of driving...

only send to the fastest %age of people snapped. Just because you saw
a flash, does not necessarily mean you will get a ticket...
get one, you can either accept you were doing wrong and pay the fine, or
dispute it. I have had camera tickets before, but I pay them as I
accept I was breaking the law. I have disputed other things such as
missed Regos, and 'no front plate' tickets, as I don't see them as a
danger to others, and disputing these points of law is fun.
You may want to pay a lawyer if they charge you with dangerous driving -
but it depends on how much money & time you have to throw away vs how
much you value a spotless driving record.
Oh, and there are no 'rules' with regards to speed camera placement -
they can be put wherever they want. It started off with the only in
'speed camera area' signs, but there was no law around this - just a
general 'good faith' treatment of the issue by police. Also with the
'not too close to change in speed zone' thing. You could possibly use
it as an 'unfair' issue in a court case, but not an 'unlawful' or
'technicality' issue.

Set-up to catch people speeding? Surely not

You might be lucky - sometimes they rationalise the ticket sending and5) That camera was very busy that night as I looked in my rear view... I

One thing I have often wondered about is the legality of the illuminated speed signs on the harbour bridge and its approaches. Are they a legal speed restriction or only an advisory? I was under the impression that for a legal speed restriction to apply, the speed sign must be enclosed in a red circle. Any lawyers on the forum who could confirm. Eric. can you comment on this one.

Update!!!
I guess the "NZ Police Infringement Bureau" had encountered some legal issues with regards to the placement of the camera and the "unreasonable change in speed" as I had a talk with a good friend of mine and have since then recieved a infringement ticket for $80 for going 92km/h in a 80km/h zone...
So all is good

Re: I made a big boo boo!
I was just wondering if anything came of this? I was under the impression that the 'lit up' overhead speed signs were a reccomended speed to reduce traffice congestion. Or at least that was what a NZ Herald article inferred a few years ago when they first put them up. There was a proposal to put them all along the busy parts of the motorway.Shermio wrote: Monday night (26th) at around 8:45pm going home to the northshore from the city... A couple of years back, my father phoned up to "dispute" whether the car in the photo was actually ours.... what we'd been sent was fairly blurry, and although you could infer what letters/numbers were on the plate, it involved a bit of guessing....
The officer on the phone assured us what they have is far clearer than what they send out, and proceeded to read the details of a sticker on the back window of our car... letters that in real life are only 2-3cm tall. Dad decided not to bother disputing any further and payed up...

Haha yeah I would have thought they would include a frame or something...
It is great that the blue LED is not noticeable from the photo...
A good idea now is to place high intensity infrared LED's all around the plate... it will over expose the photo
(Don't believe me? point your digi cam at a remote control and press the buttons... )
Hey they never said anything about your plates having to be photogenic
