Transit Lanes

Post by LilRay.Sun » Thu Jun 08, 2006 8:39 am

Just wondering if anyone knows what the story is re transit lanes?

The sign says 3 people per car can use a transit lane but how does it work if you only have two seats? Are you deemed able to use the lane if you have a passenger in an MX5?

Just one of those odd thoughts you have whilst sitting in traffic, but curious to see if anyone knows...

Nope, I have never seen the need to travel on the transit lanes... I usually just drive on the bus lane, it's like a road all to yourself! ;)

I would doubt that a police officer will ping you for not having 3 people in a 2 seater.... they might give you a warning if they are having an off day... ;)

Heck, yesterday I have a meeting in Ponsonby 9:15AM and the transit lane down Onewa Rd city-bound is 3 or more passengers from 6:30am - 9am.

Without even thinking it, Im coming up a little past the start of it and I whip into the left-hand lane, not realising why more people wont take it. Its approx 8:55

I drive for a little over a minute then see the car infront of me quickly break and pull in. Thinking nothing of it I carry on my merry way doing around 55kmph.

Then I see the man in the high-visibility vest, he turns along with his camera and Im positive it was pointed directly at me :-(

Freaking out a little now, I keep driving, and a little further (maybe 500m) I see another man in a high-vis vest looking at me as I drive past and Im sure he was writing down something on his pad with his pen...

Whilst I was (at worst) 5 mins early using the lane, realisitically I was still using it outside the time when I should, so my bad... Whats the fine Im likely to be liable for here?

 You mean you didn't go and buy a blow-up doll for the job? Just make sure to buy a wig for it and you will be fine... (Not speaking from experience)

Ohhh and for the record, they have 2 camera set up... the first camera records that you were in the lane and the second one determines that you have been travelling on the said lane for over 50m if you see the first camera and duck back into the normal lanes then it is quite easy to fight the fine... or so Im told... ;)

You were very unlucky that they were still there. They have usually gone by about 8.45.

In Australia its 3 people or full capacity of the car so if theres two people then i think youd be ok in the MX, of course i'm relying on the fact that the LTNZ has some brains about these things but we know they dont.

We asked the little man who stands on Onewa Road with his Hi-viz vest and his clipboard. He seemed to think that any vehicle has to have 3 occupants. Of course, i could have argued about the motorcycle that was coming along, but it was too early.
The plea for 2 seaters seemed to fall on deaf ears, so it looks like you'll have to crawl along with the other folk  .
Take it out and play with it.

In Australia, the law is that the car must have the allocated amount of people (3 or 4) OR the maximum passenger number the car can handle. so a mx5 is the perfect transit lane speedster!

Of course good OL' NZ isnt so sensible when it comes to traffic legislation are they...

I think you'll find its OK for buses, bikes, taxis and motorcycles and cars with 3 or more occupants. If you can't get 3 in the car "Tuff T".

Oh and I am probably the guy on the motorbike...its my two wheeled MX5 :D

But we all get our downers - I rode in the Onewa Bus lane on my bike and carried on in the motorway bus lane thinking it was all part of the same system. Mr plod at St Marys Bay took great delight in telling me that Transit NZ made the motorway rules and they "are not in the business of making it easier for people to use Public Transport so they won't let you ride in the bus lane!!"

Cost to find out that little gem...$70.... Kaching !!!!!and another revenue gatherer gets his quota!
