MX5 Crash Safety
MX5 Crash Safety
To put Chrissy's mind at rest,
I saw a sad sight today at one of my client's premises, (he is a tow truck
operator), What had been a nice silver "91 NA had obviously had one heck of a
frontal impact, square on the right headlamp and indicator.
While the car is a write off, the passenger cell was intact and the doors
could be opened, I would say that the driver got out without a scratch.
In fact, the MX5 seems to be quite a crashworthy little car, I have seen a few
that Ross Campbell has had in Hamilton and I would not have wanted to be in
any of them, but in all cases that I have seen, the passenger cell has been
intact.
Of course, the safest crashes are the ones you don't have, so driving to avoid
them renders crashworthiness immaterial
Regards
Eric

I find when driving on the motorway people don't tend to see the MX and pull
out in front of you. Perhaps it's because it's low. Has anyone else found
that?

Hi Chrissy -
just driven back from Christchurch, 2758 kms in 6 1/2 days, had the fog lights on most of the time : it's not the ones in front that pull out that worried me, it's the approaching buggers who pull out to overtake and forget to get back in their lane!

P.S. Christchurch was fantastic, great bunch in the Christchurch Club!

The NB model gets 4 stars in the euroncap test.
Unfortunately the Pedestrian rating is a single star.
So you are better to be in a car hitting someone than being hit by a car
- gee what are the odds?

On that note, I have been to a good number of fatals (as I am sure Eric
has!!!) on not one of them has even involved an MX5. I went to a fatal
involving a person and an MG once. Nasty!

On a more gentle note, just an observation here... has anyone ever
noticed how 4WD vehicles have to take the parking spaces closest to
the supermarket? Is it my imagination, but the bigger the 4WD, the
less able the drivers are to be able to use their feet?

I cant stand big 4 wheel drives and they did a case study on the type of
people who drive them. Very interesting it was. Bully is a good phrase that
comes to mind. I'm very frightened of them. We've promised ourselves well
never own one and I hope they bring in a new law to ban the big ones. They
aren't necessary to drive around the city.

Although it is a nice car, you can't actually import NAs into NZ
anymore because they don't meet NZ's frontal impact standards.

Although it is a nice car, you can't actually import NAs into NZ
anymore because they don't meet NZ's frontal impact standards.

I guess this takes us back to the "Masculinity and Hairdressers" thread.

Jeez, well I must be mixed up! I have had everything from a Fiat Bambina to an
Aston Martin DB4, from a Hyundai Excel to a BMW 528 and even a couple of
Land-Rovers and a Nissan Patrol, of course, they were all appropriate to the
times I owned them, and bear direct relationship to being either broke, flush
or gone bush!
But actually, our company operates a turbo diesel Nissan Safari, with all of
the good gear, you could drive it up the side of a house, although we take it
to repeater sites up mountains. It is also one of the nicest vehicles to do a
trip in that I have ever driven, it went to Palmerston North recently almost
as comfortably and certainly more economically than the BMW.

Hi Chrissy. If you have the MX5 NA model, convert the indicators to parking
light. It's great. Info is on the club site but an easier way to get the
lights apart is to heat them in the oven for about 6 -7 mins @ 150 - 160
degrees. Makes the car more visible & safer on the road

I have to agree with Chris on this, pick up any 4x4 magazine and you'll find hundreds of dedicated enthusiasts who don't like the way their vehicles are maligned because of bad drivers.

Thanks I saw that and decided I was too impatient and would probably melt them
with a blow torch or put it in the oven and forget it. I have my blonde

I must have three personalities.
1998 NB MX5 25,000km per year, 1997 Honda Odyssey 15,000km per year, 1996
SWB Isuzu Bighorn Diesel 40,000km per year.
MX5 to drive any time I can, including work.
Honda when I need to carry stuff (and 7 seats can be useful)
Isuzu as I work on radio sites that by their nature are in inaccessible
places (4wd only).
So others can see me, I rewired the (1998 NB) MX5 factory fog lights so they
operate as daytime running lights any time the engine is running. Being a
small low car and a dark colour (green) you have to be defensive as if you
were on a motorbike. Assume all other drivers won't see you! On my 1992 NA I
installed a couple of very bright LED lights in the mouth as running lights.
These do make the car very visible to others when approaching.
I find people pull out in front of my Isuzu quite often and assume it is
because of the colour. It's blue. Perhaps I should add running lights to it
as well.
If you want a very visible colour, get a yellow one!
I don't go along with the 'case studies' showing big 4WD drivers are
'bullies'. Surely depends on where this is done. Perhaps in an upmarket
suburb where they are bought for appearance, but I for one have mine as it's
the only vehicle for the job.
Many would like to ban my Isuzu, but the Honda takes up more road space! I
haven't heard people wanting to ban those from cities.
Grant.
