And still my car won't go, 1998 NB 1800

The computer was finally returned from service / test and the doctor duly
fitted it. Still the car refused to start.
Got a call about midday today to inform me that finally they think the fault
has been found. On very close inspection of the crank angle sensor it was
found to have suffered some mechanical damage in the past. Although it tests
ok it appears it doesn't work. Now have to wait around 10 days for a new one
from Japan. Mazda don't have these in stock and there are no used ones
available. Stands to reason I suppose as if you were wrecking a car you more
than likely would not want to get rid of the sensor without the attached
motor. Anyway at a quoted $198.00 for the part it's not worth wasting more
time tracking down an elusive used one.
Thanks to Euen for the offer of the spare ECU. Looks like I won't need it.
At least while the car is at the doctors their paint shop will remove the
lower front spoiler and repair the gravel rash. I figured they may as well
do that as I won't notice the extra charge on the total bill I am expecting.
It's only been five weeks since the car first stopped! No wonder I don't
need any grumpy pills!
Should have the car back in time for the Labour weekend rally (I hope).

Hi Grant, why not try Ross at MX5mart as I know he has several NB,s he is
wrecking. He might lend you a sensor to try !! Is it the sensor or the plate
behind the pully that the sensor reads from that is damaged as when I did my
cam belt I accidentaly put the plate on back to front and the car would not
start till I changed it around. Ok I confess so no wally nominations!!!

The mechanic tried Ross (I told them about him) but he hasn't wrecked any
1800's only 1600's and doesn't have any sensors. The sensor is definitely
damaged and has been for a long time, way before I bought it. The plastic
housing has a bad crack in it and has possibly let all sorts of dirt in it.
Plus it has become misshapen which is what the final straw would have been,
I guess. It might be possible to repair it but after waiting this long
another 10 days for a brand new one seems like a good idea. There is no
damage to the plate.
Putting that plate on backwards must have caused a few anxious moments!
