I am looking at getting a CHEAP track car just to do club days etc and would like some input from you guys.
I would like something rear wheel drive if possible but it does not have to be. And it does not have to be the fastest car out there just something for a bit of fun.
Here are a few cars I have considered but anymore you think of would be great.
MX5 (of course)
FXGT COROLLA
LEVIN
MR2 MK1
MR2 MK2
CELICA
CURREN
Looking to spend as little as possible to kick it off

I love Mk1 MR2's, but after getting an MX5 I really don't miss my old car!

I used to own a mk2 MR2 and although they are fun and handle really well, I personally prefer the MX5 because a '5 handles just as good if not better and, if worst comes to worst and you stack it, at least you have the engine bay and engine to absorb some of the impact (I was ALWAYS mindful of a head on crash in my MR2 because I knew I would come off second best)

What's as little as possible?
4 cylinder E30?
Don't count those out,
can be had for cheap,
and can always be developed into a E30 series car for relatively cheap.
Lots of fun, lots of after market, and plenty of people that race them.

Look for the likes of Honda Civics and Integras too if you're not opposed to them.
You can pick up a DA6 Integra for $2000 or less and you've got a whole load of B16 powered fun, or you could get a DOHC ZC-powered EG Civic for similar.

Dohc ZC anything, lighter the better.
Old ford laser hatch even? Can't be much weight in those.

Depends how much you really want to spend. Civics are not a bad place to start from!
I went for the mx5 as I just love the FR and it's relatively cheap.
Not to mention I was passing civics with my (more or less) factory mx5
1 X Primera
2 X Silvia
1 X BMW E30
1 X Audi A6
3 X Mazda MX5 (1989, 1990, 1991)

A look at the 2K Cup website,
www.2kcup.com (entry list and results from last season) would give you some idea of what is out there and what goes the fastest.
By definition they must be cheap cars.

With IHE and a tune, my civic made 160wkw on a non turbo 1.6.. Dont rule out a B16/B18 Civic/Integra. I would go to the EG/DC chassis if you're looking at it. EF/DA are getting on now

Agreed. Might be more difficult to find an EG/DC with B16 or B18 hence why I suggested the likes of a DA6, but they definitely are getting on and showing their age, as well I know

I have been keeping a close eye on the 2k cup for a while now and yeah that throws up a few cars worth looking at.
I have nothing against hondas and if i could find a decent one at a good price i would have a good look at it

That was my first thought too, good buying for $1500. Race it till that gearbox gives out then replace it with another 5 speed.
