OK next problem. I have steam coming out of the driver's
side windscreen heater vent. I'm thinking that the heater
core is leaking. How easy is it to get at that beast?
Should I get it repaired or visit Ross?

Ooop's - problem. If it is your heater core, regardless of wheather it can be repaired or needs replacing, the whole dash has to come out to get at it - no easy way around it unfortunately.

If you are in Auck would be happy too look at it for you.

Take the engine out and cut a hole in the firewall if that's too hard ;-)

Whichever route you take, (repair or replace) the entire dash has to come
out. I repaired mine about 6 months ago and it wasn't easy. It took a
couple of hours to take the dash out mainly because it took a while to find
the last bolt (in the middle below the windscreen). Trisha came out, took
one look and disappeared, it seemed the interior had been hit by a bomb!

May seem like a silly question but are you sure its
steam? Some times the air conditioning can over cool
the air and it condenses to such a point that it
becomes cloudy. I thought id lunched a cooling system
once as all this white steamy air suddenly poured out
the vents! I dont think the air con will be in the car
much longer as we only ever use it a few times in the
winter to defrost the windscreen.

Is it actually steam or cold vapour?

Leaves a condensation on the screen and occurs no matter what the AC
setting is.
