Xtra Mail

I agree about the xtra problems. I just received an email this morning on
my xtra account that was sent from another xtra member on Sept 29. Almost a
month later !!

I quite often see other peoples replies to posts hours before I see the
original.

Hey. It's not only Xtra (although I am not a fan nor a client). I dumped Paradise.net because they were losing my e-mails - and I can prove it. I'm still waiting for one I seent myself from another machine in June and one from my son in ChCh sent in May. I took out a Yahoo mail account so as to be sure I got all my mail and because I was sick of their "authentication" problems I joined Slingshot. Even they are having that problem occasionally but at least it only lasts a short time. I was talking to my son in Auckland Sunday before last and he was losing data on Jetstream so it's not only just the dial-ups that go pearshaped. One thing about paying for a domain is you get to move around looking for the perfect ISP relatively painlessly!

I suspect that the machine paradise.net.nz are using as their primary
SMTP server is an order of
magnitude more reliable that the typical client machines sending to it.
It looks like they are running
qmail on a linux/UNIX variant. I'd be *VERY* surprised if any mail has
been lost.

As for xtra's mail problems. They are attempting to implement a
spam/virus filtering system. This needs to
be a virtual AI system, and i doubt anyone there has the `nouse to
actually get it going. Unfortunately
it looks like clear/paradise will be following suit.

I have paradise DSL and have *never* had any problems. Authentication
or otherwise.

Yes, and then you can set up your own SMTP server and make the
collection of mail your own
responsibility.
It's not only Hotmail - according to my engineer, the Xtra network
Hotmail sux IME. Trying to send email to a hotmail address may or may
not work at any point in time.
I think it depends on which way the wind is blowing.

Interesting. Was it a DNS failure or was their machine actually loosing
mail?

Rex, I have Jetstream and my own mail server and it is still a problem, I'm
afraid. I applaud Xtra's efforts to kill spam (I get so many messages about
enlarging my anatomy I am starting to wonder what my wife is telling people)
but I'm not sure the hassle is worth it.
